Szanto’s study examines a collection of Twelver Shi’i children’s books from the Syrian shrine-town of Sayyida Zaynab. As there are few Twelver Shi’is and Shi’i publishers in Syria, the Shi’i children’s books are imported from Lebanon, Iraq, and Iran. As a result, they reflect both local and regional conceptions and concerns. By drawing on the theoretical models offered by Judith Butler and Saba Mahmood, this article analyzes the processes of pious subject cultivation as well as the construction of religious authority through illustrated children’s books. It demonstrates how the nurturing of Shi’i subjects occurs in stages that emphasize affect, openness to authoritative others, and the acquisition and habituation of virtues. Within this general framework, there also exist differences in opinion with respect to precisely what kind of authorities pious Shi’is should relate to, emulate, and follow.

This paper deals with a movement motif in Jaroslav Foglar's books and with the influence of this literature on active experiencing by readers, particularly on a potential increase of their movement activities. Although the results (Jirásek et al., 2007) obtained from the empirical research do not prove any connection at a statistically significant level, we can reasonably assume that such literature for youth plays the role of a real motivational factor.

This study examines the effectiveness of a proposed English language program based on integrating two forms of children literature, mainly short stories and songs, in developing the needed life skills and language learning strategies of primary school students. Besides, it emphasized the importance of providing EFL fifth year primary students with activities and opportunities to raise their awareness of their learning, as it helped students understand how to plan, monitor and evaluate their learning. The study targeted ten life skills distributed under four main categories: cognitive, personal, social and linguistic skills. Ninety fifth grade primary students participated in the present study. Five instruments were used: the needed life skills and language learning strategies checklists, a criterion for selecting the stories and songs, the pre/post life skills measures (situation test, questionnaire, oral interpersonal communication test), language learning strategies questionnaire ...

Alice's Adventures in Wonderlands is considered as one of the most effective books in its genre around the world. It gained its fame due to many reasons, one of them is the fact that it changed several concepts in its target audience. It hit concepts that never been displayed in such books in that time. Concepts such as innocence, imagination, morality, and freedom were addressed in details in the novel. The aim of the book had been changed. It was at first to edutain a girl called Alice Pleasance Liddell, the daughter of Oxford vice chancellor and the dean of Christ church. Then, the goal of the book was changed to be a published book for public to read. This essay will discuss the book from a very specific angle. It will spot the light on the concept of imagination and level of perceiving that kind of imagination on Alice. Last but not least, the impact of this imagination will be discussed in terms of its effect on the novel overall. Firstly, the concept of imagination was skillfully addressed through the readiness of Alice to be triggered to set free her imagination. At the very beginning of the book it was clearly stated that Alice peeped on her sister's book to be surprised that it contains no pictures. Alice peeped twice and being bored for sitting silent at the bank next to her sister express the curious girl whose imagination needs to be ignited by any following action. It was clearly stated in the beginning of the book that " ALICE was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it ". This confirms the state of boredom that Alice experienced before the meeting the rabbit. Moreover, Dodgson knew how to deal with this concept of imagination by activation the idea of accepting facts such as Alice is bored and has nothing to do and looking for pictures in her sister's reading book. The rhetorical question that

The research here told is the Italian contribution to the international project Visual Journeys: Understanding Immigrant Children’s Response to Visual Images in Picturebooks, Conducted in Scotland, Arizona, Spain and Australia as an Observation of the Response of Migrant ten-eleven years old Readers to the Wordless Book The Arrival by Shaun Tan (2006). Reflections are made about co-construction and negotiation of meaning in a shared reading; wordless book is experienced as occasion of empowerment for those involved, giving value to individual stories and showing a positive outcome in school life, as for self-esteem and reciprocal relationships; it promotes discussion and increases interest in books, it shows an important effect on learning a foreign language and creating a group. The perspective of the whole experience is an interdisciplinary approach. The reading of wordless or silent book can be a true practice of right and belonging to the international community, and therefore a...
