A History of Muslim Sicily (by Leonard Chiarelli) covers the period of Muslim Arab rule on the island from 827 CE to the Norman conquest in 1070 CE. It is first the comprehensive research in English covering the different aspects of this 243-year period. The book brings to light a story of the island that has hardly been known outside of Italy. It is thus an essential contribution to American and European scholarship and closes the gap in the general history of medieval Europe and the Middle East/North Africa.

This paper provides updated digital images of four Qurʾān fragments from Chicago's Oriental Institute Museum (OIM) that appeared in Nabia Abbott’s Rise of the North Arabic Script, and calls attention to features of their paleography and vocalization which are not apparent from her original black-and-white plates. In doing so, it demonstrates that these four fragments all belong to the same copy of the Qurʾān, which is also the same Qurʾān as nineteen leaves in Paris’ Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BNF) and two leaves in Doha’s Museum of Islamic Art (MIA). All twenty-five folios of this Qurʾān contain a unique vocalization system that represents /a/ and /u/ with miniature red forms of alif and wāw. This system of “letter-form” vocalization signs is unattested in other Qurʾān manuscripts and corresponds with a type of vocalization which medieval sources describe as shakl al-shiʿr: “the marking of poetry.” The subsequent discussion analyzes the features of this shakl al-shiʿr system and contextualizes it within the history of both this Qurʾān manuscript and Arabic writing as a whole.

Although the 19th-century Sufi figure al-Shaikh Māʾ al-ʿAynain led a major resistance movement in the Northwestern Sahara and Morocco and was one of the most widely printed authors on the Fez lithographic press, very little information on his literary and scholarly output exists in Europhone sources. This is largely due to the marginalization of texts inconsistent with Middle East-centered narratives of reform and revival inspired by the encounter with Europe. As part of a larger effort to read Maghrebi literatures on their own terms rather than imposing European or Middle Eastern timelines and concepts, this paper reads Māʾ al-ʿAynain’s 1858 riḥla (travelogue) to Mecca for how he conceptualized his world and traveled within it, including local, regional, and transregional elements.

ABSTRACT This study deals with the lesser known part of the life of ʿĀʾisha bint Abī Bakr, namely the years prior to the civil war. I focus on her relationship with the military in the context of the wars which led to the birth of Islam as a political entity. The study revolves around three moments in which she appears as a direct or indirect protagonist, and in this last case overcoming social barriers. An ʿĀʾi-sha closer to a "lady of war" than a Muslim matron.

A patent application for our new Natural Arabetic Input Method (NAIM). Bringing focus back to Arabetic scripts users, we have introduced an alternative text input method to the prevailing and only method available today: shaping. Our new method, NAIM, works in harmony with, and as close as possible to, how users actually write and visualize Arabetic characters in a word while it is being typed.

The Academy of Athens is one of Raphael’s most famous paintings. It depicts towering historical scholars. According to Pope Pius XII in his address to the Fellows of the Pontifical Academy in 1949, «In those people you will have recognised your oldest predecessors in the investigation of both matter and spirit» (Pontifical Academy 2004). The magnificence of the Raphael’s painting is undermined by the fact that it shows only one figure belonging to the Islamic civilisation: Averroes or Ibn Rushd. Historically, it is known that Raphael painted the «Academy of Athens» in 1509-1510. Was Averroes the only figure known to the European intellectual community at the time to deserve a place in the portrait? Was he the only scholar who contributed to the renaissance, the scientific renaissance and eventually to the scientific revolution? What about those of the likes of Ibn Sina (Avicenna), al-Khawarizmi (Algorizm), al-Razi (Rhazes) and al- Tusi and his famous al-Tusi Couple? In describing the ascendance of the European renaissance, which culminated in the Scientific Revolution and then the Industrial Revolution, it will be argued that there is a case to include many towering figures from the Islamic civilisation in the portrait in recognition of their contributions. The question of how science was transmitted from the Islamic civilisation into Europe will be discussed.

The aims of this research are the results of the developing textbooks with a Dick, Carey and Carey Development model, and to know the effectiveness of the textbook in terms of improving the fluency and the correct pronunciation’s students in speaking Arabic orally. This research is development research which is using a qualitative and a quantitative approach. The development procedures in this research are divided into three stages: teaching material designing, validation of expert (the contents and the design expert), and field test is the last stage. The result of this research is (1) that the textbook with dick, carey and carey Development model (2) the textbook with Dick, Carey and Carey Development model is effective to accelerate the fluency of students. It can be seen from the T-test that is bigger than the standard of value which is 10.12 >1, 72. For that, depending on the calculation of the last result, the aforementioned hypothesis is acceptable or effective.

“They are destined to walk forever in love on the edge of a knife: homophobia in
Palestine and Israeli pinkwashing”
Joseph James Padraic Devine
The title of my essay is a modification of a line from Nizar Qabbani’s beloved poem “Qaryet il- Finjaan”, which powerfully evoked the difficulties faced by young Arab lovers in a strict traditional society. I felt it an appropriate analogy for the rock and a hard place between which LGBTQ
Palestinians exist; trapped between homophobia from conservatives in Palestine on the one hand, and the brutal Israeli occupation and damaging Western propaganda around Israeli gay rights on the other.
In my ISP I hope I have successfully shed some light on various aspects of these issues, which are complicated and intertwined with many important historical and political factors, and cannot be divorced from their cultural contexts. For example, one cannot talk about gay rights in the Middle
East without first visiting the rich history of Arab literature for example, or the long- lasting effects of colonialism in the region.
“Pinkwashing” is a term to describe the cynical use of gay rights as part of neoliberal agendas, and in the context of Israel and Palestine, given how these two societies are discussed in the West, “pinkwashing” is abundant and toxic and must be challenged; from stereotypical movies about oppressed Palestinians seeking refuge in enlightened Tel Aviv, to American Republican propaganda campaigns that create false equivalences with gay rights in one place and military intervention somewhere else. For this essay I asked LGBTQ Palestinians to speak for themselves and describe their daily realities; living double lives between secret communities and homophobic attitudes, while simultaneously fearing interrogation from Israeli intelligence and Palestinian Authority personnel.
I also tried to explore the problematics of importing Eurocentric concepts of gay identity into cultures and societies that have not enjoyed the certain freedoms of Europe and its settler colonies, while focusing on the grassroots movements within Arab society that are fighting for their civil rights and resisting on their own terms; highlighting the sense of hope and progress that exists in a society all too readily dismissed as fundamentalists, and the importance of international solidarity with oppressed people as opposed to reductive Western propaganda that uses gay rights to justify foreign policies that damage the rights of everyone, gay or otherwise. For the global gay community is entranced by
Israel’s pinkwashing narrative and all too easily fail to realise that their unquestioning support of Israel and consequently its occupation is not going to liberate Palestinian gays and lesbians any time soon. What good are "gay rights" if they are selectively enjoyed?

A spelling error detection and correction application is typically based on three main components: a dictionary (or reference word list), an error model and a language model. While most of the attention in the literature has been directed to the language model, we show how improvements in any of the three components can lead to significant cumulative improvements in the overall performance of the system. We develop our dictionary of 9.2 million fully-inflected Arabic words (types) from a morphological transducer and a large corpus, validated and manually revised. We improve the error model by analyzing error types and creating an edit distance re-ranker. We also improve the language model by analyzing the level of noise in different data sources and selecting an optimal subset to train the system on. Testing and evaluation experiments show that our system significantly outperforms Microsoft Word 2013, OpenOffice Ayaspell 3.4 and Google Docs.
This study examines three Palestinian works, Hanna Ibrahim’s short story “Infiltrators,” (1954), Mahmoud Shukair’s short story “Mordechai’s Moustache and His Wife’s Cat” (2004) and Ibtisam Azem’s The Book of Disappearance (2014).... more
This study examines three Palestinian works, Hanna Ibrahim’s short story “Infiltrators,” (1954), Mahmoud Shukair’s short story “Mordechai’s Moustache and His Wife’s Cat” (2004) and Ibtisam Azem’s The Book of Disappearance (2014). Remarkably, each features a Jewish Israeli as a central character in the story; more intriguing, in each, the story is mediated through the perspective of that character– focalized by him or her. I address the significances generated by using focalization as a rhetorical strategy, particularly fraught because the perspective is that of a character from the other side of a national conflict. My analyses address whether the narrator reinforces the focalizer’s perceptions or undermines them, and how the technique of focalization unsettles established perceptions and offers critique of the system. I work through how conveying a story through the perception of a character on the opposite side of the conflict foregrounds and complicates structures of representation and power dynamics.
