This case study on prospective copper-gold mining in Mindanao is one of thirteen case studies in ... more This case study on prospective copper-gold mining in Mindanao is one of thirteen case studies in the book "The Open Cut: Mining, Transnational Corporations and Local Populations" (2016) that deals with the increase in social conflicts in settings where large-scale mining is happening or about to happen. It looks at the case of Tampakan, where the local Bla'an population has for decades interacted with transnational corporations interested in the area's sub-surface resources. The chapter provides an analysis of the inter-ethnic set up of the region and its natural resources and addresses questions of land ownership and indigenous peoples rights. It then looks at the local people's strategies of accommodation and resistance as well as the various companies' strategies to convince the local population to fully embrace mining.
