Description & Background

Wikimedia projects and libraries have a shared goal of making knowledge freely and widely available. The Libraries Space showcases collaborations in the interest that common mission. Considering UNESCO’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as the Wikimedia Movement's strategic goals of striving for “Knowledge as Service” and “Knowledge equity”, the space will bring together librarians (whether in title or in spirit), Wikimedians, Wikimedia affiliates, knowledge professionals, and those who are passionate and engaged around the intersection of Wikimedia and Libraries, and see possibility for beneficial collaboration.

Wikimedia and Libraries continue to collaborate in several areas and have formed several programs and group to facilitate common interest, such as The Wikipedia Library and Wikimedia and Libraries User Group. However there is so much more: collaborations between affiliate groups and libraries; librarians using and adapting Wikimedia projects to meet their internal goals; Wikimedians learning about the inner workings of libraries.

Focus of the space

• Sharing global experiences and best practices (for example, through talks and panels).
• Learning from each other and building capacity (for example, through workshops and panels).
• Collaborative work on joint projects/goals (for example, working groups and workshops).
• Partnerships building — going beyond the Wikimedia movement (i.e. what do we need to do to better partner with a like-minded organization).

Sessions will be diverse in format and will include: lightning talks (5 min – 10 min) presentations (30 min) panels (30 min – 45 min) workshops (30 min – 60 min) ideation session (30 min – 60 min) something else! Some examples of sessions Few ideas on topics for sessions How Wikimedia projects can be used as a tool in teaching about information and media literacy. How Wikidata may serve as part of the bibliographic infrastructure. How Wikimedia Commons is used in conjunction with digital collections. Using Wikidata to support scholarly communications. What is the importance and role of WikiCite in library networks. Strategies to transfer knowledge of working with libraries between various Wikimedia communities and vice-versa Note: Please note that these are a few ideas by the space leaders, and all the sessions doesn't necessarily need to be on these lines only. You are welcome to propose your idea. Because we have limited time and want to include as many perspectives as possible you may not receive as much time as you have requested. During the selection process, we are likely to prefer/favour sessions that emphasize sharing ideas to help participants explore areas for Wikimedians to collaborate with libraries and vice versa skill building sessions aimed at capacity building diverse panels with multiple participants from around the world ideation sessions aimed at solving specific issues/brainstorming on solutions for a raised problem sharing best practices aimed at helping people to adopt them in their programs We are less likely to include sessions that focus on Summary talks about individual/organisations projects/programs/initiatives, with no lessons shared. Sessions that largely are in a lecture format
