Corporate motives influence how news is neglected, reported, and contextualized. It is informative to examine the extent to which news content varies based on source and period. As a longstanding critic of news media, and a leading public intellectual, Noam Chomsky is a worthy case study. Three author-created, corpora of news articles referencing Noam Chomsky were created. The corpora contained articles from Agence France-Presse (AFP; n = 54), The Associated Press (AP; n = 48), and the Cable News Network Wire (CNNW; n = 6), from the years 2012 to 2022. Number and length analyses, along with hypothesis tests, established the degree of similarity existing among the articles of the three news wire services and periods. Analysis of variance showed that news source was significant in terms of both the number of articles (H2), F(2,6) = 5.916, p = 0.038., and article length (H4), F(2,105) = 23.936, p = 0.000 ( = 0.05). This holds implications for international business as the philosophers selected as the basis of ethics are informed by culture. Business publications provide a source for exploring this phenomenon. Articles from the CNKI database were downloaded and analyzed in KNIME. An author-created ontology was used to identify business ethics articles. Corpus linguistic techniques established philosophical sediments. From a Marxian perspective, Marx and Mao Zedong figured prominently, where Plato and Aristotle were frequent non-Marxian philosophers. A Mann-Whitney U test showed the median frequency of Marxian philosophers is significantly greater than non-Marxists. Dyadic analysis revealed more frequent reference to socialism over capitalism. These results suggest the philosophical sediments of these articles rest primarily on Marxian philosophers and collectivist constructs. As nations increasingly use artificial intelligence, they will use different ph...

The rhetorical context in which analytics is enacted influences the communicative approach. In this chapter, two dominate elements are considered: 1) analytic complexity and 2) rhetorical context. Along this analytic-rhetorical spectrum, a four-square matrix is developed using these elements to describe distinct environments in which analytics is enacted. While each of the four positions are addressed for inclusion in this chapter, the focus is narrowed to an exposition of strategies for effectively communicating insights within the realm of decision analytics. Marked by a more basic analytic framework, decision analytics aims to support successful consumption and utilization at senior levels of organizations. Decision analytics differ from other types of analytics since they support the process of making decisions versus providing information. This chapter focuses on how analysts can use decision a...

Given Nietzsche's prominence in modern and postmodern thought, his constructions of power are relevant for understanding broader implications of ethics in the context of business. In this paper, the corpus linguistics techniques of type-token ratios (TTR), sentiment analysis, clustering, and concordancing enabled an assessment of Nietzsche's uses of power and the establishment of points of consistency and divergence among his fourteen major philosophical works. The results suggest that Nietzsche's posthumous manuscript, The Will to Power, is significantly different from the other 13 works in terms of its focus on power. Additionally, his later works are richer in textual variety (as measured by TTR) than his early and middle works. Through the concordance analysis, the authors identified themes in Nietzsche's use of power, which provides a fulcrum for understanding potential linkages between Nietzschean po...

In... more Education is a frequent area of concern when attempting to improve organizational performance. In this paper, absorbing Markov chains were used to assess education levels of civil servants within Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC). The results suggest that AFMC will have 47% of its workforce with an advanced, college degree by the year 2030. Given an increasingly educated workforce within AFMC, ethical implications for management strategy were explored. Specifically, the authors examined the ethics of managing a highly-educated workforce in ways which are procedurally similar to those used for a workforce which was historically less educated. Through a thematic bifurcation, ethical solutions were presented which will either provide more autonomy for the highly-educated workforce or attempt to change the internal credentialing process so that the current management strategies are aligned to a more appropriately-educated workforce.

Like commodities, official correspondences are often indistinguishable. Adherence to templates provides uniformity in arrangement if not also content. When this approach works well, it is both efficient and effective. However, the universal applicability of this paradigm is suspect. Such standardization stifles creativity. When one is responsible for communicating insights in business, a radical break with convention might be beneficial in terms of gaining attention and provoking thought. Deviating from established norms is risky. Further, while one learns key tenants of business communication at work and in college, one is seldom informed as to when to stop following the rules and forge a new communicative path forward. In this chapter, existential insights are combined with communication theory to illustrate how authentic organizational communication can assist in one becoming who one is while also communica...

Collectively, these elements comprise a major part of what one might call the defense acquisition system. Yet acquisition reforms, when implemented, tend to focus narrowly on changing the internal acquisition processes of the military Services. This approach has failed to produce substantial improvements. If we are to achieve significant improvements, acquisition reforms should address the broader defense acquisition system. Simply modifying the militarys acquisition processes is inadequate to the task of generating actual improvements. It is time to consider seriously the prospect of re-forming acquisition reform.

Strategic determinations manifest distinctive positionings situated along the spectrums of theory/praxis and rigor/relevance. Comprised of elements of art and science, marketing is a domain uniquely situated for examining this gap. Such an understanding holds international relevance as business competition is increasingly global. Once inscribed, marketing publications lend themselves to scrutiny and provide a point for assessing discontinuities in content between scholars and professionals. Through an application of corpus linguistics approaches frequently used bigrams and themes emerged which illustrate significant gaps in content. Specifically, this research suggests that where both groups focus on marketing themes, practitioners focus on media, technology and temporal positioning, and academics focus on customer relations, economics and scientific rigor. While political tensions existed between the United States and the Soviet Union since the culmination of the World War II, when the Soviet Union conducted its first nuclear test in 1949 and then successfully launched Sputnik 1 in 1957, these political tensions became more pressing concerns to American organizations. In fact, the perceived existential threat posed by communism became an observable rhetorical justification for organization and action within the United States. Through the use of corpus linguistics techniques, a comparative analysis was conducted on the foundational documents of the rightwing, John Birch Society and the leftwing, Students for a Democratic Society. Relative word frequencies, collocations, concordancing and statistical analyses were conducted around the use and context of the keyword communism. The results suggest that while these radical a...

With reductionist parameters and defined algorithms, models and simulations obtain a definitiveness lacking in the reality they explain. Increased computational power has enabled the production of complex representations. This increased complexity makes understanding what is happening “behind the scenes” almost entirely unintelligible to consumers. At the same time, advancements in Animation enable practitioners to present the results at almost movie-like levels of production. This subtly transforms the ontological status of the results, making them appear as something one should view rather than something about which one should think. What happens when producers and consumers of models and simulations lose the self-certainty associated with their project? Such a situation calls into question the performative aspects of both groups’ maneuvers. We situate the locus of this discussion around the notion of validity. Once considered essential, the quest for validity perhaps increasingly reveals a form of existential absurdity and, in a nihilistic twist of postmodern thought, the radical devaluation of one of the ideals of the philosophy of science.
