Daniel Lyons

Daniel Lyons (born 1960) is an American writer. He was a senior editor at Forbes magazine and a writer at Newsweek before becoming editor of ReadWrite. In March 2013 he left ReadWrite to accept a position at HubSpot.

Lyons is the author of a book of short stories, The Last Good Man (1993); a novel, Dog Days (1998); and a fictional biography, Options: The Secret Life of Steve Jobs, a Parody (2007). Under the pseudonym "Fake Steve Jobs," he also wrote The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs, a popular blog and parody of Apple CEO Steve Jobs. He wrote the script for the May 2015 episode of HBO's Silicon Valley (TV series), "White Hat/Black Hat" while on a 14-week break from HubSpot in 2014.

Lyons was born in Massachusetts. He received his MFA from the University of Michigan in 1992.

Work as technology analyst

Lyons was a senior editor at Forbes magazine, covering enterprise computing and consumer electronics. He was also the author of the Forbes cover article, "Attack of the Blogs", where he wrote that blogs "are the prized platform of an online lynch mob spouting liberty but spewing lies, libel and invective," claiming that Groklaw was primarily created "to bash software maker SCO Group in its Linux patent lawsuit against IBM, producing laughably biased, pro-IBM coverage."

Daniel Lyons (shipwreck)

The Daniel Lyons was a schooner that sank in Lake Michigan off the coast of Algoma, Wisconsin, United States. In 2007 the shipwreck site was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

History

The ship was built at Oswego, New York in 1873. It cost $27,000 to build.

On October 17, 1878, the vessel departed from Chicago, Illinois and was bound for Black Rock, New York. In the early morning hours of the next day, the Daniel Lyons spotted the running lights of the Kate Gillett, a schooner that was carrying fence posts from Cedar River, Michigan to Chicago. The Kate Gillett then began moving erratically. When it became apparent that the vessels were about to collide, the Daniel Lyons tried to make a desperate evasive move, but it was unsuccessful. The Kate Gillett struck the Daniel Lyons in the side, pushing her stem nearly halfway through the hull. For around fifteen minutes, the two vessels remained locked together. After crew members from the foundering Daniel Lyons boarded the other ship, they broke apart and the Daniel Lyons sank bow first. Despite also being badly damaged, the Kate Gillett began her journey to Chicago again. Both crews worked at a vigorous pace to keep the ship afloat, and made it to port the next day.

Daniel Lyons (rower)

Daniel K. Lyons (born March 8, 1958 in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania) is an American rower who competed in the 1988 Summer Olympics in the coxed pair.

Lyons has rowed on seven US National Teams, resulting in two world bronze medals, a world gold medal, and a gold medal at the Pan American Games. After winning 11 national rowing championships, he was inducted into the US Rowing Hall of Fame.

At the 1988 Olympic Games, his partner Robert Espeseth became sick and he finished in 11th place with a replacement partner. Lyons has also coached rowing since 1983 at the US Naval Academy, St. Joseph's Prep in Philadelphia, Oxford University, Stanford University, Drexel University, Georgetown University, and Penn Athletic Club in Philadelphia.

In 1981, Lyons graduated from the United States Naval Academy. In 1987, he obtained a degree in politics, philosophy and economics from Oxford University. In 1989, he was granted his master's degree in American history by Villanova University. He later also pursued a Ph.D. in military history from Temple University. He has also taught history at the US Naval Academy and Rutgers University.

Daniel (Bat for Lashes song)

"Daniel" is a song by English recording artist Bat for Lashes, from her second studio album, Two Suns. It is her best selling single to date, selling over 46,000 copies worldwide. The song was announced as the lead single from Two Suns in January 2009, then released as a digital download single on 1 March 2009, and as a 7" vinyl single on 6 April 2009. The track was written by Natasha Khan and produced by David Kosten, as with all tracks on the album. Ira Wolf Tuton from Yeasayer provided the bass lines for the song and Khan did the rest of the instrumentation herself. Khan said in an interview with The Sun newspaper that "Daniel" is based on a fictional character that she fell in love with as a teenager. The single's cover features Khan with an image of the character Daniel LaRusso, from the film The Karate Kid, painted on her back. A character much like LaRusso also features at the end of the music video which goes with the song. The B-side of the 7" is a cover version of a 1980 single by The Cure.

Daniel (department store)

Daniel is an English department store chain and Royal Warrant holder, with its flagship store situated in central Windsor. It was established in 1901 by Walter James Daniel, and is privately owned.
