Hakin

Hakin is a small coastal town in Pembrokeshire, Wales. It belongs to the parish of Hubberston in the historical hundred of Roose. It is located directly to the west of the larger town of Milford Haven, and is often considered a district of the latter. It has a population of 2,313 inhabitants as of 2001. It is mainly residential in nature.

Etymology

The name Hakin is derived from the Old English Hecke, meaning "corner in the bend of the stream", and the German Ecken, meaning "a point of land". The word was used as a geographical term to describe the location of an area, as late as 1794. The term Haking to describe the current boundary was first recorded in 1861, in the British Postal Guide, provided as a sub-office under Milford. Prior to this, the area had been referred to as Hubberston, or Hubberston-Haking.

History

Hakin has been a settlement since at least the 13th century. It has variously be known as Haking, and later as Old Milford, to distinguish it from the newer settlement across the tidal estuary. A ferry service to Ireland operated from Hakin towards the end of the 18th century, although this ceased in the early 19th century. Between 1801 and 1803, the town and waterway were protected by temporary batteries at Hakin Point, in response to the perceived threat following the Fishguard Invasion.

Hakin9 is a Polish online, weekly publication on IT Security. The magazine also features some articles in English, German and French. A limited number of free articles are available on their web site. The full version of the magazine is available online to subscribers.

Hakin9 is a source of news and information about offensive hacking methods as well as ways of securing systems, networks and applications.

Hakin9 is published by Hakin9 Media Sp.z.o.o Sp Komandytowa, based in Poland.

History of publication

Hakin9's first edition was released in 2005, then after a few-month-long break the real editing process started in September 2006.

DICKS hoax

In August 2012, Hakin9 published an e-book entitled Nmap Guide, intended to be a guide to the Nmap network scanner software. The first chapter was entitled, "Nmap: The Internet Considered Harmful - DARPA Inference Checking Kludge Scanning", which forms the acronym "DICKS". The entire content of this chapter is a nonsensical hoax. The chapter credited several authors, including Mark Dowd, who posted on Twitter that he had nothing to do with it. Some of the authors, such as Matthieu Suiche, thanked the Pwnie Awards Jury for the award.
