This needs a robust control strategy that can cope up the effects of external and internal disturbances. Sliding mode control (SMC) law is a substantial case from one of the wider class of the robust controller design techniques. Even if this control strategy is robust, it develops a chattering effect due to the high switching frequency components of the controller. In order to avoid this effect various techniques have been used in various research works. The aim of this work is reviewing the various design and modification techniques implemented for developing a SMC and removing its drawback.

The optimal integral controller is firstly developed by using Pontryagin's minimization principle. It is then integrated to the conventional sliding mode controller for achieving an effective interception. The stability of the proposed optimal guidance law is proved by the law of Lyapunov stability and simulation results.
