I am interested in developing aspects of education that pupils find motivating and meaningful. The purpose of education should be to develop learners' critical skills and intellectual curiosity. I suspect that most of the things we actually do are heading in the opposite direction. I publish also on critical biblical studies, and on children's literature. This paper seeks to demonstrate the literary nature of biblical stories about polygyny, underpinned by the need for fictive kinship relationships in order to create and explain the political status quo after the Babylonian exile. It examines the stories about polygyny in Genesis as later means of creating fictive identity national identity. I examine the depiction of slave-wives and concubines in law and literature, and the use of harems as literary mimics of Persian rulers. Through the lens of polygyny, the paper explores emerging national identities in the postexilic period, and how marriage is viewed politically. A new history of biblical polygyny is attempted.
