THE RISE OF THE EMPOWERED CITIZEN DEVELOPER
THE RISE OF THE EMPOWERED CITIZEN DEVELOPER
In today’s digitally driven economy, IT has become the lifeblood of enterprises. At the same time, it requires many people across organizations to be able to design and build applications that help move information to the places where it is needed. In essence, IT has become much bigger than the IT professional or developer — IT has become the business. This survey report focuses on the role of the citizen developer. What is a citizen developer? For purposes of this survey, we define citizen developers as business users, not part of IT departments or contracted IT services, who build and use their own scripts, programs, algorithms, or interfaces designed to perform business functions or support business processes.

Over-The-Top Video Delivery
Streaming Media magazine and Unisphere Research, along with key sponsor and research partner Level 3 Communications, set about to gauge the state of over-the top video delivery and the challenges and opportunities for global OTT service providers. Survey respondents weighed in on OTT growth, both today and in the near future. Key findings from the survey include the following: Nearly three-fourths of respondents see OTT as a viable revenue opportunity today. Even for those survey takers who indicated they’ve not yet moved to offer OTT services, there was a strong understanding that it’s no longer just a video-on-demand (VOD) play. Additional responses indicate that offering both video-on-demand (VOD) and live-linear channels will be critical for OTT providers to entice new prospects and gain market share. This trend is a critical one. For existing OTT providers, offering a VOD service may not be enough to maintain, much less grow, market share. Survey respondents highlighted the deli

Large-Scale Webcasting Services
Streaming Media magazine and Unisphere Research, along with Onstream Media Corp., and Transitions, Inc., set out to gauge trends in Large-Scale Webcasting (Large-Scale Webcast) and the impact of pricing on recurring webcasting usage. Approximately 700 respondents completed this 34-question survey, with approximately 84% of respondents hailing from North America. Over half (56%) of survey respondents identified themselves as working for a company that produces live webcasts. Respondents who work for companies that produce Large-Scale Webcasts were aware of the need to support smartphones and tablets. However, many of these same respondents noted that live webcasts are often viewed on a bigger screen than a smartphone or tablet: typical webcast viewing still including laptops, desktops, external monitors connected to a laptop, or even a set-top box or streaming dongle on a television. This use of a bigger screen to view live webcasts was one of several surprise findings, perhaps due t

The OTT-Video Services Market: Today's Trends and What is Next for 4K, HDR, HFR, and VR
The OTT Video Services is hot. Right now, Hulu is nearing 12 million paid subscribers; Netflix has in excess of 75 million subscribers, and is available in almost 200 countries worldwide; and Amazon has almost 50 million Prime members, all of which have access to original and licensed video on-demand (VOD) OTT content as part of their memberships. And, beyond the “big 3” of OTT, there are hundreds of OTT providers, catering to various niches. Whether building a base of OTT subscribers around user-generated content (UGC), linear channel OTT as part of the “TV Everywhere” initiatives, or even live event OTT pay-per-view or event models, OTT providers serve the needs of viewers across the content spectrum. Understanding that the agility of OTT providers to simultaneously look backward to gather best practices while also looking toward the future is what will enable their accelerated market growth, Unisphere Research and Streaming Media magazine have published a new survey report, titl

Moving Data: Charting The Journey From Batch To Blazing, 2012 DBTA Survey On Data Integration Strategies
To compete in today’s hyper-competitive economy, organizations need the right information, at the right time, at the push of a button. However, there is no one single source for relevant data; the typical enterprise today has a vast array of data types and formats pulsing through its veins, flowing in from its own systems and databases, as well as streaming in from external sources. For today’s data manager or professional, the challenge is being able to provide end users access to actionable information in as close to real time as possible. Today’s data systems—many of which were built and designed for legacy systems of the past decade, supporting far less data—are not up to the task.

Application servers are proliferating, the number of end users is expanding rapidly, and data volumes and types are growing impressively as part of today’s increasingly digital organizations. However, the performance of database systems is struggling to keep pace—in fact, databases are hampered by reliance on disk based storage, a technology that has been in place for more than two decades. Even with the addition of memory caches and solidstate drives, the model of relying on repeated access to the permanent information storage devices is still a bottleneck in capitalizing on today’s “Big Data.”

Bringing Continuous Availability to Oracle Environments
Bringing Continuous Availability to Oracle Environments
Many organizations today face a significant challenge that is negatively impacting their operational efficiency, revenue potential and ability to provide a trusted IT environment: the prevalence of mission-critical application downtime. To combat this problem, infrastructure owners and DBAs have introduced strategies to increase resiliency—however—both unplanned and planned downtime are still pervasive despite these efforts. As a result, this study discovered that 46% of survey respondents are less than satisfied with their current availability strategy for their mission-critical Oracle-based applications.
From Database Clouds to Big Data
From Database Clouds to Big Data
Organizations need to prepare for rising levels of big data streaming into their organizations. The ability to manage and assure 24x7x365 database performance, regardless of workloads and user demands, is key to agility and growth. Faster delivery of databases requires automated packaging and deployment processes, both at the initial instantiation and throughout the entire life cycle of the databases in question including decommissioning. As data environments grow larger and consumers increasingly expect “on-demand” access, the ever-increasing complexity in governance requirements can potentially slow the roll out of database services. Database administrators face uphill challenges to address these challenges in today’s multi-layered and globally diverse data centers. Those who succeed are able to adapt and evolve by translating database services into critical services the business can depend on.
Achieving Enterprise Data Performance
Achieving Enterprise Data Performance
This is a report on the results of the 2013 IOUG Database Growth Survey. It’s no secret that today’s organizations are awash with data. Data is streaming into transaction systems, appliances and devices from a wide variety of applications, and new sources including social media. Proponents of Big Data state that data contains veins rich with information for decision makers and the business, and many organizations have made it a priority to capture and use this data. However, what many organizations are also discovering is that managing and storing this all this data has a cost. While there is a drive across the industry to introduce new and more digitally compact forms of data storage, as well as cloud storage, these solutions do not get to the heart of the problem for enterprises—data needs to be managed more effectively, and tied closer to the business, from the start.
