A comparative review and analysis of 42 different scenario projects drawn from government and NGO futures projects around the world. Both the methods used and the content of the resulting scenarios are compared and clustered, resulting in a 'roadmap' of scenario archetypes. The methods review also includes the results of "lessons learned" contributed by both government policy staff, and the futures/foresight consultants who contributed the scenario research.

This chapter reviews the historical context of scenarios, beginning with brief sketches of early scenario activity, from its post-World War II origins up to about a decade ago. It focuses in particular on the subset of environmental global scenario projects that have a public policy and scientific orientation, since these are of greatest interest to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. Special consideration is given to the following post-1995 global scenario building exercises: Global Scenarios Group, Global Environment Outlook, Special Report on Emissions Scenarios, World Business Council for Sustainable Development, World Water Vision, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. These scenarios, despite their diversity, are rooted in a common set of archetypal visions of the future: evolution, progression, and decline.

The root of Gk. ἔλπομαι has traditionally been analyzed as a by-form of PIE *u̯el(-)h₁-, *u̯el(-)d- and *u̯el(-)ǵʰ- with a labial extension. This paper discusses the problems that arise under the root-extension approach (such as the putative anaptyxis in Lat. volup < *u̯(o/e)l-p-i-), examines the relevant etymological dossiers (including (ἐ)έλδομαι from unrelated *h₁u̯eld-), and proposes a new solution for Arm. gełj (< *gʰéldʰ-s-o-, cf. Ved. gŕ̥tsa-). The paper seeks to rehabilitate E. Hamp's analysis of Lat. volup as reflecting a nominal compound *u̯(e)lh₁-h₁p- 'take a wish (to heart), adopt a wish'. It it is argued that Gk. ἔλπομαι can be derived from the same compound, used as a verbal neo-root, with the loss of the laryngeal by Schmidt-Hackstein's Law in athematic aorist 3 sg. *(h₁)e-u̯elh₁p-t > *(h₁)e-u̯elp-t.
