Social bonds between people and their pets are more popular than they have ever been. Yet archaeological and anthropological evidence suggests that human-pet bonds have existed throughout history, enduring despite their relative lack of practical utility or material value for humans and, in this sense, presenting a challenge to evolutionary theory. Citing abundant research, the chapter shows that the human-pet relationship should be regarded as “mutualistic,” conferring adaptive benefits on both participants For humans, animal companionship promotes social engagement and alleviates the debilitating mental and physiological effects of psychosocial stress. Animal-assisted therapeutic interventions for people with a variety of cognitive, emotional, and physical disabilities are also becoming increasingly widespread. For animals, the human-animal bond has opened a new ecological niche and allowed dramatic increases in population size. However, the chapter also raises a number of ethical...
There has been unprecedented development of research into human– animal interaction (HAI) in recent years, and this has produced rapid growth in our knowledge and understanding of the benefits that accrue from pet ownership. • Recent evidence and developments in the field of HAI have improved our understanding of the role that pets play in cardiovascular health, their ability to help us cope with stress, some of the ways they can enable us to retain health and mobility into old age, that their mere presence helps us to engage with new people and strengthens communities, and that they may even enhance our immune function. • Future research would be enhanced by the inclusion of pet-related questions in national health surveys; the adoption of standardized protocols and measures; incorporation of new technologies; and further exploration of animal-assisted interventions (AAI), including the expanding roles for therapy and service animals.

Toward a psychology of human-animal relations2015 •
Nonhuman animals are ubiquitous to human life, and permeate a diversity of social contexts by providing humans with food and clothing, serving as participants in research, improving healing, and offering entertainment, leisure, and companionship. Despite the impact that animals have on human lives and vice versa, the field of psychology has barely touched upon the topic of human-animal relations as an important domain of human activity. We review the current state of research on human-animal relations, showing how this body of work has implications for a diverse range of psychological themes including evolutionary processes, development, normative factors, gender and individual differences, health and therapy, and intergroup relations. Our aim is to highlight human-animal relations as a domain of human life that merits theoretical and empirical attention from psychology as a discipline. Exploring the contribution of animal companionship to human wellbeing: A three-country study2024 •
While it is often assumed that animal companions unilaterally contribute to the wellbeing of their human companions, research has to date been equivocal. At best it appears to be that animal companionship may add an extra dimension to human lives, and thus human wellbeing. In this paper we report on a quantitative study conducted in 2021 that surveyed 2090 people with animal companions living in Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Participants responded to measures asking about their wellbeing and psychological distress, their connectedness to other humans, and their interactions with and attachment to animals. Regression analysis found that relationships with humans was associated with reduced psychological distress (β =-.594, p = .001), while relationships with animals (β = .205, p = .001), particularly cats (β = .077, p = .001), was associated with increased psychological distress. Regression analysis also found that relationships with other humans (β = .522, p = .001), interactions with animals (β = .142, p = .001), and bonds with animal companions (β = .128, p = .001) were associated with increased wellbeing. We conclude by considering the groups for whom relationships with animals are most likely to offer unique benefits, and suggest the importance of continuing to examine why it is that relationships with animals are both intertwined with, yet distinct from, human-human relationships.

Evolution of research on human-animal interaction: A review2023 •
Human-animal interaction (HAI) is a growing area of research that examines the ways in which humans and animals interact and the benefits that result from these interactions. This paper reviews the evolution of research into the mutual benefits of HAI over the past several decades. Early research in this area focused primarily on the therapeutic benefits of HAI for humans, particularly in the context of animalassisted therapy. However, more recent research has broadened the scope of HAI research to include a wider range of human-animal interactions, such as pet ownership and animal-assisted activities. One important finding from this research is that HAI can have a range of positive effects on human health and well-being, including reductions in stress, anxiety, and depression, as well as improvements in physical health outcomes such as blood pressure and heart rate. Additionally, HAI has been found to have positive effects on social outcomes, such as increased social support and socialization. Importantly, this research has also demonstrated that HAI is a mutually beneficial interaction, with animals themselves experiencing positive outcomes from interactions with humans. For example, animals involved in animal-assisted activities have been found to have lower stress levels and improved well-being. The purpose of this review is to examine the evolution of research on HAI, starting from its early beginnings to the present day.
