October 16, 2023 (9 days later!) Dear Friends and Colleagues, On the morning of October 7, ca. 2000 HAMAS terrorists launched a brutal attack on civilians in Israeli kibbutzim, moshavim and towns adjacent to the Gaza Strip. They went from house to house to burn, torture, mutilate, and kill Jewish families. They gunned down hundreds of young people at an outdoor music festival that turned into a scene of rape and massacre. Not only did they kill parents in front of children, raped women and children, murdered children and soldiers still asleep in their beds, but also beheaded babies that were sleeping in their cribs. Among the torture and unfathomable atrocities, they even tore open pregnant women and pulled their unborn fetuses out of their bellies. Outside of the Holocaust, these acts of genocide, during which Hamas/ISIS terrorists went from house to house systematically killing and torturing Jewish families, are unparalleled in modern history. Since Saturday, the enormity of these atrocities has surfaced, with more than 1300 dead and 3500 injured, along with reports of inhumane behavior by HAMAS terrorists. The death toll may increase as over 400 people are missing. Hundreds of survivors who lived through this massacre were kidnapped and are being held by Hamas/ISIS in Gaza, including children and infants. Elderly people who survived the Holocaust were marched away from their homes and executed in cold blood. This horrific brutality was pre-planned and orchestrated by the Hamas/ISIS leadership. It is unacceptable that scholars and academic organizations worldwide have not condemned this heinous terrorist attack. Basic human decency requires a crystal clear and unequivocal denouncement of the terrible acts of terror and war crimes that occurred on Saturday. Your strong condemnation is both necessary and expected, especially from those who have visited and worked in Israel and who wish to continue to work here. We demand that you stand up and speak out! Silence and political correctness are no longer tolerable in the face of genocide. Nor is the attempt to equate the brutality of Hamas/ISIS with the Israel’s legitimate efforts to protect and defend all Israeli citizens. HAMAS is ISIS. They are not Palestinian freedom fighters. Do not be fooled by the Hamas/ISIS terrorist-based propaganda. The situation is not merely a matter of free speech or political disagreement: they beheaded our babies sleeping in their cribs! We Israeli researchers, actively engaged in global academic collaborations, contributing to journals, organizing conferences, and co-directing archaeological excavations with international teams, insist on your unwavering support and strong condemnation of the deadly Hamas/ISIS attack on innocent Israelis. We urge you to advocate for humanitarian treatment of over 150 hostages held underground in Gaza enduring severe torture as we make this plea. Failing to condemn is to align yourselves with evil perpetuated and endorsed by Hamas/ISIS Nazis. We interpret your silence as an indication that you support beheadings, mutilations, the burning people alive, the kidnapping and holding babies (!), small children, men, women, and the elderly hostage! If you are not against inhumane terrorism – you are for it! In horror and in shock over your silence over this horrendous, horrific attack, Israeli Researchers
