THE EUROPEAN LEGACY, 2024
Understandably, it is difficult for scholars who were raised and trained in light of the narrative of an a-Semitic and tolerant Erasmus to recognize and accept the antisemitic elements in his writings: that he hated not just Judaism and Biblical-virtual Jews but also living European Jews, and idealized a Europe free of Jews. In short, it is time to reconsider the standard narrative and recognize those aspects that have been rejected or disregarded by most scholars as to provide a more comprehensive and ethically balanced narrative of Erasmus and the Jews.

Any legal mechanism that aims to find corporations criminally liable must be able to attribute blame to complex, multilayer and opaque structures, often comprising thousands of people, each capable of acting and making decisions. As it currently stands under Australian criminal law, it is very difficult for a corporation to be prosecuted for having committed a serious crime. This situation exists despite having had special rules for attributing fault to corporate entities-in the form of the corporate culture concept contained in div 12 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth)-on the statute books for decades. To understand why the corporate culture concept remains dormant, this paper draws from the work of Hannah Arendt, and her unique philosophical approach to the relationship between 'thinking' and responsibility, to provide new ways of addressing the theoretical impediments to the use of div 12.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the globus pallidus internus (GPi) is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for idiopathic generalized dystonia. More recently, it has been applied as a treatment for focal and segmental dystonias. This patient population offers an opportunity to study the effects of alteration of pallidal outflow on previously normal limb function. We sought to retrospectively characterize the extent of novel GPi DBS-induced adverse motor effects in patients with adult-onset cervical and cranial-cervical dystonia using a questionnaire, and compared the findings to dystonia improvement as measured by standard scales. Despite significant improvement in dystonia (65% in mean Burke-Fahn-MarsdenDystonia Rating Scale motor score, p < 0.005, and 59% in mean Toronto Western Spasmodic Torticollis Rating Scale score, p < 0.008), slowing and difficulty with normal motor function was reported in previously nondystonic extremities in 10 of 11 patients. Symptoms were com...

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a cancer mainly caused by asbestos fiber inhalation, characterized by an extremely long latency and poor prognosis. Recently, researchers have focused on testing the diagnostic ability of several biomarkers. Gamma-Glutamyltransferase (GGT) has been demonstrated to be the sum of several GGT sub-fractions activity, classified based on their molecular weight in big-GGT, medium-GGT, small-GGT, and free-GGT. This work aims to evaluate whether specific GGT fractional enzymatic activity patterns could be helpful in MPM diagnosis. We analyzed blood samples from 175 workers previously exposed to asbestos, 157 non-exposed healthy subjects, and 37 MPM patients through a molecular exclusion chromatographic method. We found a specific profile of GGT fractions activity, significantly associated with MPM, resulting in an increase in b-, m- activity, along with an evident, yet not significant, decrease in f-activity. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) an...

Numerical investigations of escape panic of confined pedestrians have revealed interesting dynamical features such as pedestrian arch formation around an exit, disruptive interference, self-organized queuing, and scale-free behavior. However, these predictions have remained unverified because escape panic experiments with real systems are difficult to perform. For mice escaping out of a water pool, we found that for a critical sampling rate the escape behavior exhibits the predicted features even at short observation times. The mice escaped via an exit in bursts of different sizes that obey exponential and (truncated) power-law distributions depending on exit width. Oversampling or undersampling the mouse escape rate prevents the observation of the predicted features. Real systems are normally subject to unavoidable constraints arising from occupancy rate, pedestrian exhaustion, and nonrigidity of pedestrian bodies. The effect of these constraints on the dynamics of real escape pani...
