Faience Figurines in their Archaeological and Museological Contexts (Egypt, Nubia, and the Levant, 2100-1550 BC): The Catalogue Raisonné2024 •
This is the second of two volumes that explores the world of faience figurines in Egypt and the adjacent areas of the Levant and Nubia during the Middle Bronze Age (2100-1550 BC). Its companion volume is titled Miniature Forms as Transformative Thresholds (BMPES 7). This volume serves as a catalogue raisonné for faience figurines and provides a detailed analysis and description of over 1150 pieces along with their archaeological and museological contexts. The volume is accompanied by numerous drawings, photos, cards, archival material, graphs, tables, maps, and plans. The research is primarily based on material coming from documented archaeological contexts, with two main unpublished cores from Lisht and Byblos, but also includes material from more than 150 sites. The museological research focuses on three main collections: the Petrie Museum, the British Museum, and the Musée du Louvre, but also encompasses a total of 35 different museums in 33 different cities across Europe, Northern Africa, Western Asia, Russia, and the USA, as well as private collections and public auctions. The volume covers not only faience figurines, but also provides a comprehensive study of the material dimension and culture of the late Middle Kingdom (1850-1650 BC), encompassing a diverse range of object groups, including a large corpus of pottery and stone vessels, as well as information on the people and society from that period.

The Origin of Esotericism: An Analysis of the Ismaili Esoteric Approach to Qur'anic Interpretation Asal Usul Esoterisme: Analisis terhadap Pendekatan Esoterik Ismaili dalam Penafsiran Al-Qur'an2024 •
This study examines the Ismaili method of interpreting Qur'anic verses, focusing on their esoteric hermeneutics. The Quran serves as a fundamental legislative source for various theological factions, each seeking to substantiate their claims by referencing its verses. It also stands as a principal source for muhaddithin, fuqahā (jurisprudents), and others, contributing to the emergence of tafsir, a discipline aimed at elucidating the Quran's meanings and intentions. Consequently, different schools of interpretation, or tafsir, have developed over time. One strand of interpretation adheres to the literal meaning of the text, known as Zāhir, while another explores mystical or esoteric meanings, termed Bātin, occasionally without strong support from Arabic language or Qur'anic and Hadith evidence. Among Shiite sects, the Ismailis distinguish themselves as one of the most enduring, recognizing Ismail bin Ja'far al-Sādiq as their Imam and establishing influential states in Islamic history, such as the Qarmatian state in Bahrain (899-1077) and the Fatimid Caliphate in North Africa (909/1171). To thoroughly investigate this subject, a qualitative research approach is proposed. Given the historical and theological nature of the topic, qualitative methods, such as textual analysis and historical research, facilitate a comprehensive exploration and interpretation of complex phenomena. The findings of this research indicate that Ismailism has heavily relied on the esoteric interpretation of Qur'anic verses since its inception, aligning with Ismaili belief systems, with Qur'anic verses assuming a more significant role than Hadith in their doctrinal framework. The essence of this article lies in delving into the Ismaili approach to esoteric hermeneutics, predominantly drawing from the sect's primary sources..
The Long 2020: Reflections of Epidemiological Times
Biswas, Samata (The Long 2020) Coronavirus and Other Epidemics in Bengal2024 •
This chapter, divided in three sections, attempts an overview of the contemporary literary productions in Bengali, in the wake of the Covid 19 pandemic and the ensuing lockdown. It also attempts to describe late 19th- and early 20th-century Bengali literature's engagement with multiple epidemics that had devastated the Bengali countryside: malaria, cholera, smallpox, etc. The repeated waves of pandemics and their representation in Bengali literature were integral in the construction of the Bengali realist novel, creating a space of ferment which allowed for reconstruction of society, reconsideration of social divisions and consolidation of social work as an extension of nationalist activities. This second section enquires in some detail about these texts, ranging from Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Anandamath to Sarat Chandra Chatopadhyay’s Srikanta, from Bibhuti Bhushan Bandyopadhyay’s Aranyak to Banaphul’s Jangam. The third section of the paper analyzes the construction of an alternate society through Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay’s social realist novels, written and set in the 1920s and 30s, in rural Bengal and in Calcutta. Most of his novels like Ganadebata, Dhatridebata, etc., reckon with a society in flux, dealing on one hand with colonialism, on the other, with the gradual transformation in traditional societies, the destabilization of existing hierarchies and creation of new ones. In each of these moments of epidemiological crisis, the novels also recognize extraordinary characters, individuals who had been pushed to the margins of traditional society. In moments of crisis, they transcend their marginalities through agentive action and empathy. Their action in the course of the novels, become crucial in framing the post-pandemic social relations.
