Abstract: Despite the traditional image generated by historicist archaeology, the ethnic composition of Turdetania is a complex, dynamic and unstable reality in a continual process of changing as a result of different political, social and cultural circumstances. Newest theoretical and methodological hipothesis from Sociology and Anthropology let the archaeologist focus on this problem from new points of view questioning the inherent value of literarial texts and archaeological resources to define ethnic group. Both must be considered as contributors on the construction of the ethnic identity. We must not forget the difficulty to define ethnic groups in space and time because ethnicity is a constant process not a phenomenon. In this work, we will focus on the two principal groups in Turdetania: turdetanians and punics, who present a wide variety of particular situations, instead of homogeneous ethnic and territorial units.

The aim of this article is to study the hillfort thermalism from an archaeological point of view. Material remains are considered as a main source in order to draw historical knowledge, making use of a critical and objectifiable analysis. We have pursued three objectives: to establish a general balance of the current state of knowledge of the material remains of this thermalism, to submit to critique the arguments that support a pre-Roman dating for this phenomenon and to make an overall assessment of their alleged links with a thermal tradition of recent Prehistory, associated with religious or initiatory practices. We conclude that hillfort thermalism is a phenomenon limited to certain territories in the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, that it must be necessarily interpreted as a product of the roman influence in the region, and finally, that we have no evidence to infer that it has been marked by a certain transcendence.

Throughout history natural hot springs have attracted people of all cultures not only because they are exceptional and curious, but also because they can ease the settlement of population-mainly in complex environments. Already in prehistoric times humans realized of the benefits of hot springs (miraculous, healing, helping with domestic tasks, etc.). For these reasons, these sources have been the reason for the fixation of specific hydronyms. This article presents the follow-up that is being carried out on the territory concerning names of places with pre-Roman root in dorr-/ durr-matching places with thermalism.
