Handbook of the Anthropocene, 2023

This handbook entry examines the issue of housing in the Anthropocene. The issue of housing in the Anthropocene involves many factors and aspects with respect to housing given the facts of climate change. To limit these factors and possible through lines for this entry, housing in the Anthropocene will be analyzed according to three dimensions to make sense of the future of housing needs alongside climate change: (1) Housing and human population. The fundamental questions with respect to housing in the Anthropocene involve human population, and the concurrent creation of more housing given increases in the human population in the future; (2) Housing and spatial requirements. Following on from the extra requirements for human housing given increases in human population, the critical issue of spatial requirements for this housing will be addressed; (3) Housing and net zero. The third section of this entry examines the possibility of housing in the Anthropocene reaching net zero and thus not contributing further to climate change. For the purposes of this entry, a time ceiling of 2050 will constrain each section, and limit the possibility of this entry becoming embroiled in overly speculative science fction.

Royalism, War and Popular Politics in the Age of Revolutions, 1780s-1870s, 2023

This chapter provides an overall analysis of popular royalism in Southern Europe, using case studies from three Bourbon monarchies: Spain, France and the Kingdom of Naples (1789–1830). Through the concepts of king, war and bread, it shows how popular participation in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars forged a new relationship between the king and his subjects. Royalist combatants felt entitled to ask for specific rewards in return for their service, thus opening the way for expressing their social and economic demands. Popular royalism provided an original means of political participation through which working people intervened in the transformation of the traditional monarchies during the Age of Revolution.

Шумило, С. В. Початковий період перебування прп. Паїсія Величковського на Афоні та започаткування перекладацької діяльності // Сіверянський літопис, науковий часопис. 2023. No 6. С. 52-72. Анотація. Мета дослідження. Дослідити початковий період перебування українського церковно-культурного діяча та святого Паїсія Величковського (1722—1794) на Горі Афон з 1746 по 1758 рр., проаналізувати причини і мотиви, з яких він почав займатись звіркою, переписуванням і перекладами святоотцівських книг та заснував власну духовну школу. Наукова новизна. Проаналізовано листи Паїсія Величковського, інші джерела та свідчення щодо його початкової діяльності на Афоні. Встановлено, що основне місце зосередження українських ченців у 1740-і рр. на Афоні було на землях, що належали Пантократорському монастирю. Завдяки проведеному аналізу та здійсненій експедиції на Афон встановлено точні місця розташування створених Паїсієм чернечих осередків на Афоні – каливи «Кіпа́рі» (1746–1754) і келії св. Костянтина (1754–1758), встановлено походження назви «Кіпа́рі», яку на слов’янський манер прийнято було називати «Кипарис». Наголошено, що ці святині є важливою складовою історії, духовної культури, традиції та спадщини українського чернецтва на Афоні. Здобута в Києво-Могилянській академії освіта спонукала Паїсія захопитися збиранням по афонських монастирях стародавніх богослужбових та святоотцівських рукописів і книг давньогрецькою мовою з метою виправлення за ними слов'янських перекладів. Аналіз листів Паїсія засвідчує, що ще під час перебування в Костянтинівській келії він вперше звернув увагу на невідповідності слов'янських перекладів святоотцівських книг із їхніми грецькими оригіналами. Наголошено, що першим, хто надихнув Паїсія на започаткування такої діяльності, був його колишній наставник прп. Василій Поляномерульський (бл. 1692–1767), який так само походив родом із Україні (імовірно, з Чернігово-Сіверщини). Висловлено припущення, що на нього міг мати також вплив український філолог і перекладач, колишній викладач Києво-Могилянської академії ієромонах Яків (Блонницький), який у цей же час (з 1751 по 1761 рр.) подвизався на Афоні в Зографському монастирі. Встановлено точне місцерозташування келії старця Даниїла із Димитрівського Ватопедського скиту, який на Афоні був духівником Паїсія і також мав вплив на нього. Відзначено, що започаткування літературної, перекладацької та просвітницької діяльності школи Паїсія на Афоні припадає на період його перебування в Іллінському скиту. У справі переписування і перекладу книг він взаємодіє з колишніми каппадокійськими ченцями. Діяльність Паїсіївського братства сприяла перетворенню Іллінського скиту на один із важливих духовно-культурних і просвітницьких осередків на Афоні та за його межами. Наголошено, що вивчення початкового періоду перебування Паїсія Величковського на Афоні дозволяє зрозуміти причини і мотиви, з яких він почав займатись звіркою, переписуванням і перекладами святоотцівських книг, а також заснував власну духовну школу. PAISIUS VELICHKOVSKY STAY ON MOUNT ATHOS AND THE BEGINNING OF HIS TRANSLATION ACTIVITY Abstract. The purpose of the study. To investigate the initial period of the Ukrainian church and cultural figure and saint Paisius Velichkovsky (1722-1794)'s stay on Mount Athos from 1746 to 1758, to analyze the reasons and motives for which he began to verify, rewrite and translate the patristic books and founded his own spiritual school. The methodological foundations of the study are based on the principles of historicism, scientific objectivity, systematicity, and a dialectical approach to historical phenomena. In accordance with the goal and objectives, a combination of general scientific, interdisciplinary, and special research methods was used. Scientific novelty. The letters of Paisius Velichkovsky, other sources and evidence of his initial activities on Mount Athos are analyzed. It is established that the main place of concentration of Ukrainian monks on Mount Athos in the 1740s was on the lands belonging to the Pantokratoros Monastery. Thanks to the analysis and the expedition to Mount Athos, the exact locations of the monastic centres created by Paisios on Athos – the kaliva “Kipari” (1746-1754) and the Cell of St. Constantine (1754-1758) – were established, and the origin of the name “Kipari”, which was commonly called “Kyparis” in the Slavic manner, was established. It is emphasized that these shrines are an important component of the history, spiritual culture, traditions, and heritage of Ukrainian monasticism on Mount Athos. The education he received at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy prompted Paisius to become interested in collecting ancient liturgical and patristic manuscripts and books in ancient Greek from Mount Athos monasteries in order to correct their Slavic translations. The analysis of Paisius's letters shows that during his stay in the Constantine cell he first drew attention to the discrepancies between the Slavic translations of the patristic books and their Greek originals. It is emphasized that the first person who inspired Paisius to start such activities was his former mentor, St. Basil of Poiana Marului (c. 1692-1767), who also came from Ukraine (probably from Chernihiv-Sivershchyna). It is suggested that he may also have been influenced by the Ukrainian philologist and translator, former teacher of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Hieromonk Yakov (Blonnytsky), who at the same time (from 1751 to 1761) was a monk on Mount Athos in the Zohraf Monastery. The exact location of the cell of Elder Daniel of the Vatopedi Skete St. Dimitrios, who was Paisius' confessor on Athos and also had an influence on him, is established. It is noted that the beginning of the literary, translation, and educational activities of Paisios' school on Mount Athos dates back to the period of his stay at the Skete of Prophet Elijah. He collaborated with former Cappadocian monks in rewriting and translating books. The activities of the Paisios Brotherhood contributed to the transformation of Skete of Prophet Elijah into one of the most important spiritual, cultural, and educational centers on Mount Athos and beyond. It is emphasized that the study of the initial period of Paisius Velichkovsky's stay on Athos allows us to understand the reasons and motives for which he began to verify, rewrite and translate the patristic books, and also founded his own spiritual school. As with other sectors of the economy, pharmaceuticals and healthcare is undergoing digital transformation and with some companies this is continuing at a rapid pace as companies attempt to mine the sources of data available. For those involved with the industry, this means an array of new abbreviations, initialism and acronyms to learn. Terms such as: artificial Intelligence, machine learning, internet-of-things (or the ‘industrial’ internet-of-things -IIOT), blockchain, augmented reality, predictive analytics, big data analytics, Industry 4.0 (or Industry X.0), digital twins, and telehealth are becoming part of the modern manufacturing lexicon.

This thesis investigates the events surrounding Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 through the lens of the theoretical framework of realism. It examines the geopolitical dynamics between NATO’s security enhancement efforts and Russia's aggressive foreign policy, aiming to uncover the underlying causes of the escalating tensions between Russia and NATO. Utilizing a comprehensive analysis of political and military factors, the research delves into the motivations behind Russia's actions and their implications for international security and regional stability. By analyzing primary sources such as official statements, policy documents, and international treaties, alongside secondary sources including scholarly articles and expert analyses, the study seeks to provide a detailed perspective on the interplay between NATO's strategic initiatives and Russia's belligerent behavior. The findings shed light on the aggressive nature of Russia's foreign policy and the resulting security dilemma faced by NATO, offering insights into potential pathways for addressing Russia's aggression and fostering future cooperation within the framework of realism.
