Drawing on the Clark and Wells (+33/) model of social phobia and recent developments based on metacognitive theory (Wells, ,**0) this keynote will aim to answer this question and describe the implications for treatment. Individuals with social phobia have an inner-focused processing style on entering feared situations that generates a negative and distorted self-image. In addition they engage a style of processing before and after exposure to social situations characterized by negative conceptual activity (worry and rumination) which strengthens negative thoughts and undermines the e#ects of exposure.
