The need for denture treatment in public health will increase as the population ages. However, the impact of dentures on nutrition, particularly overdenture treatment, remains unclear although the physical and psychological effects are known. We investigated whether treatment with a mandibular implant supported overdenture improves nutrient intake and markers of nutritional status better than a conventional complete denture in edentulous patients. Systematic review and meta-analysis. Medline, EMBASE and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched for eligible studies published up to April 2016. We included studies which compared the treatment effect of an overdenture to conventional denture on nutrition, in which primary outcomes included changes in intake of macronutrients and/or micronutrients and/or indicators of nutritional status. Two reviewers independently evaluated eligible studies and assessed the risk of bias. We used a fixed effects model to estimate ...

The aim of this prospective clinical study was to evaluate the masticatory function (MF) and subjective perception of patients with poor denture-bearing tissue in relation to change and the time required to identify an improvement in these parameters after rehabilitation with mandibular overdentures (MO) by two narrow-diameter two-piece implants. Twenty-three edentulous patients were selected for MO installation. The masticatory function (MF) was evaluated with the masticatory performance (MP) and swallowing threshold (ST) tests. In the MP test, each volunteer was instructed to masticate a portion of Optocal (standardized artificial test food) for 40 masticatory cycles. During the swallowing threshold test, the patients were instructed to chew a new portion of Optocal cubes until they felt the desire to swallow. The MF tests were performed while complete denture (CD) wearers (baseline) and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after MO loading. In addition, the subjective perception was assessed t...

A large segment of the elderly, more than one-third of those aged above 65 years, are edentulous.1 The relationship among dentition status, masticatory function, and nutrient intake is of importance. The effect of edentulous state on nutritional and health status is an important but an overlooked public health issue.2 As the age progresses, it is a much accepted fact that there exists some relationship between health of oral tissues and general health. Absence of teeth due to any reason affects the health of oral tissues and the body in a huge way by altering the quality of life along with nutrition and food habits.3 As far as dental implants are concerned, reports of initial analysis involving both functional and esthetic components of life have been proved to be in favor of both patients and the dentists.4 To improve oral health outcomes, an adequate knowledge of the way the individuals use health services and the factors predictive of this behavior is essential. In this modern er...
