2020, The Turkish Online Journal of Distance Education
Martin Weller’s 25 Years of Ed Tech aims to contribute to the history of the educational technology (ed tech) field which is seen as a nascent area throughout the years. While the author introduces the prevalent ed tech applications and tools throughout the 25 years, he hopes these technologies, lessons learned and experienced gained, can put up to the future implementations of ed tech in higher education. The author examined 25 technologies over 25 years, starting from 1994 until 2018 (Figure 1). Using his personal experiences, reflections from the field and preferences in the selection of these technologies, the author prioritizes each year in which the related technology was effective, not the year it emerged. Even though the choice of “one technology per year” seems to have undervalued some other technologies or technological movements, it appears that there is a need for other publications that should accompany this book, which forms a basis for the ed tech history.
2023
Open, Distance, and Digital Education (ODDE) includes all kinds of teaching and learning processes in which educational technologies, digital media, and tools are used to present and deliver content, as well as facilitate and support communication, interaction, collaboration, assessment, and evaluation. With the global Covid-19 pandemic, ODDE has now entered the mainstream at all levels of education, and a renewed dialogue on ODDE has emerged, engaging many regions and countries. The Handbook of ODDE arrives at just the right time, intending to provide a comprehensive and updated overview of the field for educators, researchers, policymakers, and administrators in a wide range of sectors such as k-12 education, higher education, adult education, and workplace training. This Handbook has brought together leaders and scholars in the field of ODDE from around the world to discuss diverse perspectives and research findings on all important issues in ODDE
Blockchain Technology Applications in Education, 2020
Blockchain is an online decentralized and distributed ledger technology that has the ability to keep and track records in a safe, verifiable, and transparent manner. More significantly, it has an infrastructure that is compatible with Web 3.0, which offers great potential for lifelong learning. This chapter explains the different modalities of learning (formal, non-formal, informal), blockchain technology, and its current use in educational processes. Based on the findings, the authors suggest that blockchain technology can be used to connect and interlink different educational experiences that occur in different educational modalities, enabling us to evaluate educational processes holistically and thus promote lifelong learning through the use of cutting-edge technologies.
The rapid developments led by the digitization of society have been described as heralding the fourth industrial revolution. Individuals have more learning choices than ever before in both formal and informal settings. A fundamental change is needed in the way we think about education's role in global development because it has a catalytic impact on the well-being of individuals and the future of our planet. This chapter explores the topics of open online learning, learning spaces, personal learning and learners' orchestration of their own learning, leadership and the digital transformation and quality related concerns raised by the global digital transformation. Quality related questions are today on student satisfaction, short and long time impact, for individuals, and for the society. Leaders and managers in higher education have to take their responsibilities, and can make a huge difference related to the role of higher education, its offers, services, processes, quality and impact.
Global Oer Graduate Network, 2021
A global agenda published in September 2015 by UNESCO gives education planners and practitioners a roadmap for the next 15 years (Education 2030 Incheon Declaration and Framework for Action). The main goal of the agenda is recognized as " ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all " (p. 5). The Member States develop policies and programs for the provision of quality open and distance education with sustainable financial and legal framework, and use of technology, including the Internet, open educational resources (OER), massive open online courses (MOOCs) and other modalities to improve access in order to reach this important goal by 2030. Institutions, especially universities, have realized the full potential of OER and MOOCs and have started to develop their own policies with regard to teaching, learning, and research resources in the public domain. For example, educational institutions try to understand how to employ an innovative approach which goes beyond teacher-centred knowledge transfer, promotes sharing and re-use of OER and probes current knowledge of open educational practices, establish reward mechanisms, supportive measures for developing and sharing OER and MOOCs experiences, clarify copyright and define licensing schemes. The purpose of this study is to look at how national strategies on OER and MOOCs in leading countries such as Canada, Japan, South Korea, Turkey, the UK, and the USA. Therefore, special concerns and priorities in these countries, and emerging general awareness in terms of affordable and quality open and distance learning and training will also be addressed.
