It can be defined as 0.1% of congenital heart diseases, and it could present isolated or could belong to the spectrum of the Pentalogy of Cantrell (PoC), which is a rare congenital disorder first described in 1958 by Cantrell. The full spectrum of this syndrome consists of midline supraumbilical abdominal wall defect, defect of the lower sternum, deficiency of the anterior diaphragm, defect in diaphragmatic pericardium and congenital heart disease (Cantrell et al. 1958) [1]. The incidence of EC is sporadic with only 5.5 to 7.9 per 1 million live births (de Rubens Figueroa et al. 2011) [2]. PoC has its origin in embryologic development, resulting from defective formation and differentiation of the ventral mesoderm at about 14 to 18 days of embryonic life [1]. This chapter explores the mutually reinforcing transformations in American state-society and foreign relations engendered by the First World War and its aftermath. The post–Second World War period is typically seen as the moment of decisive rupture in the history of US foreign relations with the establishment of American hegemony and the making of the Cold War. This chapter problematizes the notion of such a sharp break by highlighting the continuities between the two postwar periods contextualized within the longue durée of American state-formation and the emergence of a racialized anticommunism. In particular it examines the ideological-political and cultural antecedents to Woodrow Wilson’s liberal internationalist project and its relationship to the defense of white supremacy at home and abroad. US hegemonic practices were constituted in and through the racial articulation of an anticommunist “common sense” defined by a militantly normative Americanism with roots in the First World War and its immediate aftermath.
Controlling the spread of influenza to reduce the effects of infection on a population is an important mandate of public health. Mass media reports on an epidemic or pandemic can provide important information to the public, and in turn, can induce positive healthy behaviour practices (i.e., handwashing, social distancing) in the individuals, that will reduce the probability of contracting the disease. Mass media fatigue, however, can dampen these effects. Mathematical models can be used to study the effects of mass media reports on epidemic/pandemic outcomes. In this study we employ a stochastic agent based model to provide a quantification of mass media reports on the variability in important public health measurements. We also include mass media report data compiled by the Global Public Health Intelligence Network, to study the effects of mass media reports in the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. We find that the report rate and the rate at which individuals relax their healthy behaviours (med...
We present a computational model of planning, scheduling, and execution that is capable of supporting the interactions of a self-interested agent with other agents in a contracting environment over an extended period of time. The model is appropriate for situations in which a customer agent, in order to ful ll its goals, must contract with other supplier agents for all or part of the necessary tasks. The agents are assumed to be self-interested and with limited rationality. Supplier agents attempt to gain the greatest ...
The study aimed to assess the extent of implementation of the recruitment and selection process at HuangHai Property Management Company in Qingdao, Shandong, China. The study used a descriptive-survey research design, and the investigation's foremost objective was to ascertain how the recruiting and selection process was being implemented at the company. The variables that were included were anticipation, job analysis, pool development for recruitment, and assessment procedure, deal closing, and onboarding for selection. The study employed the purposive sampling technique selecting managers and staff as respondents. A total of 102 respondents met the criteria of the study concerning the recruitment and selection process. The study found that the company effectively implemented its recruitment process, creating a candidate pool for job offers using both internal and external methods. However, gaps were identified, suggesting the anticipation of the need for more staff observations and managers' perceptions of job analysis. To better understand the job's complexity, context, responsibilities, and practices, the company should conduct proactive analysis of future demands, continuously evaluate potential candidate pools, and generate periodic forecasts of needs. Moreover, the investigation revealed that the company's selection process was effectively implemented, with a successful assessment procedure indicating a candidate's fit for the role and company culture. The onboarding process was methodical and orderly, aiming to encourage commitment and job satisfaction. However, there are still gaps in the data gathered, and the company should focus more on deal closing, particularly signing employment agreements with highly qualified candidates. This suggested that, in order to conduct a specific intervention based on differences in observation applicable to each category of variables, a significant difference in the respondents' observations regarding the extent of the implementation of the recruitment and selection process should be employed. The outcomes of the study served as a foundation to formulate a proposed program development to improve the effectiveness of recruitment and selection process that could be utilized by the involved company.
