Ukrainian Rise as a New Birth of FreedomRussian Journal of Communication
The Situation in Ukraine: One or Many Realities2014 •
The Ukrainian revolution brought a sharp increase in the bifurcation points leading to emerging new norms and meanings. Subsequently, they accelerated the process of “aging” of the traditional values relished in the Soviet society.

If we look at the past three decades in the history of Eastern Europe, Ukraine may safely be placed at the top of the chart of “unstable” states. First was the student-led Revolution on Granite in the 1990s. The outcome of that revolution was a resignation of entrenched high-ranked Soviet officials under the pressure of public opinion. Then, if we skip the 1999 anti-Kuchma protests, the next big upheaval was the Orange Revolution in 2003–04. It led to a rerun of the presidential election and eventual reboot of the government. Finally, the massive and blood-soaked EuroMaidan, or Revolution of Dignity, happened in 2013–14—which, once again, led to a drastic change in Ukraine’s ruling elites.

The chapter identifies three factors/conditions that provoked the Russian-European crisis. The first condition was V. Putin’s attempt to redefine Russia’s greatness in terms of “Western normalcy”, i.e. consumption and competitive economy. The second condition was the unique cognitive change in the mind of the Russian political elite. Deep interest in Europe and an acquaintance with the Western academic discourse pushed Russian elites to adopt a more reflective attitude toward the very idea of “True Europe” and a more assertive foreign policy. The third factor was the Ukrainian revolution, which triggered the most conflictual geo-economic interpretations in the Kremlin. In the chapter I will show how practical and representational elements of identity can explain specific moves in Russian foreign policy, including differences between its policy in Crimea and Eastern Ukraine.
The Tragedy of Ukraine: What Classical Greek Tragedy Can Teach Us About Conflict Resolution.
The Tragedy of Ukraine (Introduction and Table of Contents)2023 •
The Tragedy of Ukraine challenges the conventional view that the conflict in Ukraine is primarily an interstate conflict, and highlights its deep domestic roots. For all parties within Ukraine and beyond to move from confrontation to dialogue will require untangling these roots and embracing a change of heart, or catharsis. To assist in this endeavor, this book employs the lens of classical Greek tragedy, which once performed a similar therapeutic function in Athenian society.
This article addresses the sharp ideological conflicts which underlie attempts to characterise and explain the ongoing socio-political crisis in Ukraine, which started in 2013. It argues that both academic and non-academic commentators have presented diametrically opposed interpretations of the nature of the events of Autumn 2013 – Spring 2014, as well as of the relevant interpretations of the continuing socio-political crisis facing the country. Characterisations of these events vary from a revolution of dignity, denunciations of foreign intervention and separatist movements to assertions of a coup d'état which promoted and provoked regionalist movements and civil war. A second objective of the article is therefore to demonstrate the limitations of one-dimensional, strikingly ideologised interpretations of these events and the need for scholars engaged in the social sciences to generate unbiased, multi-dimensional, multi-level visions of complex, contradictory, tectonic transformations in contemporary Ukraine.

The situation in contemporary Ukraine is not easy to designate in one word. This is indeed a very difficult, extremely tense, unstable situation with many dimensions, which involves a number of actors and intersections of these actors on both domestic and international levels. Conflict? Crisis? Confrontation? Split?War? As we had not identified the events in Ukraine, it is obvious this is the result of the interwoven impact of internal and external causes.
