The Meaning of Irrumare in Catullus and Martial1981 •
Argues for the literal sense of this verb as present in Latin poetry, against the then-common interpretation of it as meaning "cheat." Suggests a textual emendation in a Martial epigram.

Guide and Definitions to The Latin Sexual Vocabulary by J. N. Adams, 1982, by Ann Mullaney, 20242024 •
This work is a guide to J. N. Adams, The Latin Sexual Vocabulary 1982. Adams examined the expressions speakers and writers used to communicate about bodily functions during the first thousand years for which we have recorded Latin (roughly 500 BCE to 500 CE). The outline and definitions are intended for (adult) scholars not only of Classical Latin texts, but also of those written in the Italian Renaissance period (c. 1450-1600). Books by Giovanni Battista Folengo (1490-1559) for example, show a further evolution of the Latin sexual vocabulary.

Anagnostou-Laoutides, E. and Charles, M. 2009. “The Sexual Hypocrisy of Domitian,” L’Antiquite Classique 79: 173-187.2010 •
The emperor Domitian was cast as an archetypical tyrant in the posthumous literary tradition. Since hypocrisy and sexual profligacy were recognized as typical tyrannical attributes, Suetonius used these tropes to highlight Domitian’s supposedly unworthy character. Dom. 8, 3 ostensibly describes the emperor’s praiseworthy acts in the context of enforcing traditional Roman morality; however, elsewhere in the Vita, Domitian is described as performing the very acts that he condemned, an authorial technique which emphasizes the emperor’s hypocrisy. A critical analysis of the locus in question also adds weight to the view that the Domitianus demonstrates a high degree of anti-Domitianic bias, though it manifests itself largely in the arrangement of material rather than in outright hostility on the biographer’s part.

«Vulgo dicitur»: vulgarisms in legal Latin2013 •
This paper is a contribution to the theory and history of the notion of "vulgarism". Starting from a critical reflection on the concepts of Volkssprache, Umgangssprache, Vulgärsprache, gesprochene Sprache, and the analysis of the semantic values of the lexical family of vulgus in grammatical, rhetorical and literary sources, it focuses on the function of the expression vulgō dicitur in legal texts, especially Gaius' Institutes, the Theodosian Code and the Justinian corpus. This expression introduces words or sentences that belong to different social and cultural domains of Latin but all pertain to common and general use. This seems to reflect the influence of the rhetorical principles of clarity (luciditas) and propriety (proprietas) of expression on both the ideology and practice of legal language. Such principles had profoundly moulded the classical ideals of composition and in the legal context (especially in Justinian's corpus) became enriched by the crucial requirements of a successful public communication of the Empire which needed to reach the whole of the population within the Roman orbit with all its cultural and juridical diversity. The paper concludes by posing the problem of understanding the correspondence between the ideology unveiled by the expression vulgō dicitur and the effective use of the linguistic units of various rank it introduces. It is suggested that the meaning and function of the expression may have changed over time and that this could betray the deeper fragmentation of Latin that paved the way to the Romance volgari .
