Gender, Identity and Migration in India
If Only I were a Male Work Value and the Female Body Dr Shailaja Menon2022 •
Each year approximately 20 million women in India move to live with their husband’s family on marriage. Marriage migration is by far the largest form of migration in India and is close to universal for women in rural areas. Although there are significant regional differences, most of India practices some form of patrilocal village exogamy in which women are married outside of their natal village, joining their husband’s family in his village. Across India three quarters of women older than 21 have left their place of birth, almost all on marriage. Only 15% of Indian men have moved from their place of birth. Women are typically married young, between 16 and 20, and are generally illiterate or have less than a primary school education. Although the distances are not always large, the mean travel time from her natal village is about three and a half hours and can be much larger. Sent to a new village, new brides are often subject to violence, and are forced to create a new life in a strange place only rarely of their own choosing. Within the contours of the universally and culturally sanctified marriage norms, women have very little space to maneuver. Once, they reallocate to a new geographical space post marriage, their spatial negotiations depend on their spousal/extended family relationships, education and skill levels and economic background. Many a time, they are forced to contribute their labor for the family, willingly or otherwise and their body is valued for its capacity to toil for economic gains. This paper, based on ethnographic research, revolves around the life histories of four women belonging to different castes and economic backgrounds, who migrated to Delhi, post marriage. Depending upon their socio-economic location, they negotiated with their changing life conditions. The researcher’s close proximity with these women who worked as domestic help over a period of time and the daily conversations with them induced novel meanings of labour, work, space, motherhood, notions of gender and caste and the bodily aesthetics which are discussed in the paper

Located at the intersections of international porn studies, celebrity studies, gender, sex and globalization, this article looks at the recent and unusual case of Sunny Leone, an Indo-Canadian bisexual pornographic actress who successfully crossed over to Bollywood. By examining her many lives and avatars – as an international porn star, a reality TV contestant, a Bollywood celebrity and now a show host on MTV India, who maintains an active presence on social and digital media – I suggest that the unprecedented situation Sunny Leone has engendered in India presents us with a form of transnational onscenity: in other words, it brings to the fore the centrality of porn in the economies of global cross-cultural exchange and forces us to rethink previous paradigms of both ‘pornography’ and stardom, two domains that have more or less remained mutually exclusive of each other in the sub-continent. Leone’s case brings to the fore economic, social and cultural exchanges between two mammoth entertainment industries, Bollywood and American pornography, which had not encountered each other in these ways before. The capital gains from these exchanges seem to overshadow concerns about preserving the nation’s ‘moral’ fabric and have concurrently given way to newer spaces for accommodating a celebrity like Leone. Given that her crossover from porn presents an absolute rupture from all previous paradigms of female stardom in the Indian context, I place the discourses surrounding her within the tangible anxieties and fantasies of both desire and control over her ‘Indian but foreign’ and ‘pornographic’ body. Highlighting Leone’s agency through the entire process, which is unique in many regards, this article attempts to further rethink and complicate overarching notions of ‘objectification’ that often dominate the field.

Female models in an American glamour website: geographic distribution, modeling limits and income according to their self presentations1969 •
In this article, I will analyse the sexualized and eroticized representation of women participants in the popular reality series “Bigg Boss” (season 5). Since 2006, “Bigg Boss” has had a successful run on Indian television; the series focuses on celebrity contestants. Bigg Boss has been extremely controversial for the sexualized and vulgarized representation of women and the use of abusive language. By examining the professional background of women participants, the various tasks delegated and specific sexualized and eroticized representation of women in the series, I will argue how the Bigg Boss series exploits the female sexuality. Keywords: Reality Shows, Bigg Boss 5, Sexual, Vulgar, Representation, Indian Television, Bollywood
This article interrogates how and why courtesan identities are simultaneously embraced and disavowed by Brahman dancers. Using a combination of ethnographic and critical feminist methods, which allow the author to toggle between the past and the present, between India and the United States, and between film analysis and the dance studio, the author examines the cultural politics of the romanticized and historical Indian dancerthe mythical courtesan. The author argues that the mythical courtesan was called into existence through film cultures in the early twentieth century to provide a counterpoint against which a modern and national Brahmanical womanhood could be articulated. The author brings together a constellation of events that participated in the construction of Indian womanhood, especially the rise of sound film against the backdrop of growing anticolonial and nationalist sentiments in early twentieth-century South India. The author focuses on films that featured an early twentieth-century dancersinger-actress, Sundaramma. In following her career through Telugu film and connecting it to broader conversations about Indian womanhood in the 1930s and 1940s, the author traces the contours of an affective triangle between three mutually constituting emotional points: pleasure, shame, and disgust.
