This literature review describes diverse aspects of the concept of compositional equilibrium in geometric abstract paintings, their perception, their spatial topology and their entitling.

Many works of art, notably those in the Byzantine tradition, contain depictions of upright cylindrical objects such that the outline of their top surfaces is incompatible with that of their bottom surfaces. We endeavour to elucidate whether this is a consequence of a painterly usage or a perceptual effect and conclude, on the basis of empirical evidence, that the latter cause is more likely.
From the first time I saw a picture of the Aztec Sun Stone I have been fascinated by it. The calendar aspects as well as the mythical history contained within the design just heightened my admiration for the artist or artists responsible for producing such an awe inspiring piece of sculpture. I have not studied archaeology or Aztec history and therefore I am not qualified to speculate on the meaning of the various images and patterns contained within the sun stones design. However I was trained as a draughtsman and have also produce circular pieces of graphic art and so naturally I became interested in how the designer of the Sun stone was able to carve it with such precision. I was so taken by the Sun stone that I decided that I would like to make a copy, so I downloaded a few photographs and also some drawings and began to draw the basic design features. It was then that I discovered that the layout was more complex than I first imagined as there were lots of concentric circles subdivided into various segments that did not seem easy to decipher and construct. (See Fig.1) The Concentric circles I firstly focused on the multiple concentric circles making up the design. I had no idea at this time that there was information available on Aztec linear measurements and so I decided to find the smallest distance on the stone and made that a size of one unit of length. I assumed that all dimensions would be whole numbers as I thought at the time that the Aztecs worked in ratios and not fractions or decimal places I then scaled all subsequent distances, from a picture of the sun stone, relative to the smallest distance of one unit in order to determine the radii and diameters of the main concentric circles within the design. In [1], Fernandez outlined an algebraic approach to the construction of Azulejo patterns. An open problem listed in this paper is “to describe the geometric features of these designs that account for their aesthetic properties.” This paper points to a direction to answer this problem. We identify aesthetic pleasantness with aesthetic challenge and present two definitions of aesthetic challenge: (1) Aesthetic challenge can be partially defined and quantified by the number of English phrases needed to describe an Azulejo pattern; (2) We can also define aesthetic challenge as equal to the number of primitive figures – isolated points and lines – in the fundamental octant of the Azulejo pattern. We show that these two definitions correlate and that they provide an alternative to Fernandez’s purely algebraic approach for construction of Azulejo patterns.
