Background Epidemiological studies indicate a substantial excess familial recurrence of non-syndromic Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), implicating genetic factors that remain largely unknown. The Rho induced kinase 1 gene (ROCK1) is a key component of the planar cell polarity signalling pathway, which plays an important role in normal cardiac development. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of genetic variation in ROCK1 on the risk of TOF. Results ROCK1 was sequenced in a discovery cohort of 93 non-syndromic TOF probands to identify rare variants. TagSNPs were selected to capture commoner variation in ROCK1. Novel variants and TagSNPs were genotyped in a discovery cohort of 458 TOF cases and 1331 healthy controls, and positive findings were replicated in a further 209 TOF cases and 1290 healthy controls. Association between genotypes and TOF was assessed using LAMP. A rare SNP (c.807C > T; rs56085230) discovered by sequencing was associated with TOF risk (p = 0.006) in th...

This paper outlines a multi-dimensional/multi-disciplinary framework for the study of metaphor. It expands on the cognitive linguistic approach to metaphor in language and thought by adding the dimension of communication, and it expands on the predominantly linguistic and psychological approaches by adding the discipline of social science. This creates a map of the field in which nine main areas of research can be distinguished and connected to each other in precise ways. It allows for renewed attention to the deliberate use of metaphor in communication, in contrast with non-deliberate use, and asks the question whether the interaction between deliberate and non-deliberate use of metaphor in specific social domains can contribute to an explanation of the discourse career of metaphor. The suggestion is made that metaphorical models in language, thought, and communication can be classified as official, contested, implicit, and emerging, which may offer new perspectives on the interaction between social, psychological, and linguistic properties and functions of metaphor in discourse.

Cup Foods is a Palestinian owned mosque, Halal store, and general corner store that serves the S. Minneapolis community. It is also the site of George Floyd's murder by MPD officer Derek Chauvin. What does the exploitation of Black communities by Arab corner stores have to do with Islamic history at large? How does the premodern effect modern civil rights movements, modern racial stereotypes, current social hierarchies, etc.? This course aims to take a look at how medieval Islam has a genealogy up to current American thought. The relevance of Medieval Islamic culture and civilization to current civil rights movements is evinced by the large number of Black Panther party members, who have not only converted to Islam, but have become Imams. This begs the question: what does Islamic ethics have in common with Black Radicalism? This course aspires to tackle such questions as: What does the Transatlantic slave trade have to do with Islamic slavery? What does medieval European anti-Blackness have to do with current Islamophobia? Why is anti-Black racism inherently tied to Islamophobia and Antisemitism? How do medieval bigotries live on in American culture? How has white supremacy controlled the narrative about Black Muslims in America? What did the civil rights movement of the 60s and the Black Power movement of the 70s have to do with Islam? How has all this history led to the intersection of Islam and Black Radicalism in the current #BlackLivesMatter movement?
Vegetable and poultry production currently considered as part of agribusinesses activities that generate income in many Tanzanian communities. In Mafinga Town, for example it acts as a key supplement to revenue from timber crops and other livestock enterprises. This study sought to determine empowering economically the needy students from KAPs through vegetable and poultry production. In order to make informed decision about the existing gap and needed investment during needs assessment, simple random sampling and purposive sampling were employed to collect data from 40 respondents using interviews and questionnaires methods. The data was analyzed descriptively and presented through figures, tables and percentages to identify what is the real need of the target group and determine the best alternative of meeting the need. In assessing the needy students as the target group on actual problems and deficiencies were identified and the priority was to establish vegetable and poultry production to needy students to enhance earning while learning and their reinforces participation, confidence and performance in the college. The project implementation was geared to achieve the project goal which was to enhance income generation to needy students through local chickens and green vegetables production as an alternative solution to improve their academic performance and reduce dropout at KAPs Institute of Community Development. This project enabled them to earn an income while learning hence minimizing overdependence on their poor families.
