Ioannis Adult Trainer, Aegean College igialamas@sch.gr Angelopoulos Tilemachos Business Consultant info@prosvation.gr Abstract Artificial Intelligence (ΑΙ) has become a prominent topic in various fields, including education. The application of artificial intelligence in the field of education has shown potential for improving teaching and learning processes. In recent years, artificial intelligence has made significant advancements and has permeated different areas of society. This workshop aims to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of AI concepts, their relevance in education, and practical strategies for integrating AI tools into their teaching practice. Through hands-on activities, interactive demonstrations, and collaborative discussions, participants will explore a range of AI tools applicable to secondary school classrooms. They will discover how AI can enhance pedagogical approaches, personalize learning experiences, and foster student engagement and achievement. Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, AI in Schools, Greek Secondary Education Incorporating AI into Secondary Education The integration of artificial intelligence in secondary education has gained popularity due to its practical and comprehensive nature. AI education in primary and secondary schools reflects the popularization of AI education and can effectively cultivate students' comprehensive thinking quality (Zhao et al., 2022). With the advancement of technology and the increasing integration of information technology into various educational sectors, artificial intelligence has emerged as a valuable tool in optimizing secondary school education, specifically in the field of English teaching (Li, 2017). The use of AI in secondary education, specifically in Greek schools, holds great potential for enhancing the English teaching environment. Through the integration of AI technology, educators can create intelligent and personalized teaching environments that cater to the individual needs and learning styles of students (Zhao et al., 2022). With the advancement of information technology and English curriculum integration, artificial intelligence has provided a new platform for the creation of an intelligent and personalized English teaching environment (Ding et al., 2021). Challenges in Implementing AI in Education Despite the potential benefits of incorporating artificial intelligence in secondary education, there are several challenges that need to be addressed in order to effectively implement AI in Greek schools. One challenge is the proper training and professional development of teachers to effectively use AI tools in their teaching practices (Zhao et al., 2022). Teachers need to be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to properly integrate AI technology into their teaching, as well as navigate any potential ethical or privacy concerns that may arise. Additionally, financial constraints may hinder the widespread implementation of AI in Greek schools. The cost of AI technology and infrastructure may be a barrier for many schools, especially those in economically disadvantaged areas (Tran et al., 2019). However, the pedagogical benefits and impact of AI in education on a larger scale are still unclear for teachers (al-Zyoud, 2020). The integration of modern educational technologies, such as artificial intelligence, has been a crucial topic for educators and researchers in Greece (Hao, 2022). Integrating AI in Greek secondary schools can provide a new platform for the creation of an intelligent and personalized English teaching environment. With the integration of information technology and the English curriculum, artificial intelligence serves as a tool for optimizing secondary school English teaching (Li, 2017). By incorporating AI in Greek secondary schools, teachers can use intelligent systems to provide personalized feedback and guidance to students, enhancing their learning experience (Hu, 2022). Furthermore, the use of AI in Greek secondary schools can facilitate more efficient and effective English writing instruction. By incorporating AI technology, teachers can provide students with organized support in improving their English writing skills (Hsu et al., 2021). Case Studies: Successful AI Implementation in Greek Schools One successful case study of AI implementation in Greek secondary schools is the use of AI-powered language learning platforms that create an intelligent and personalized English teaching environment for students (Song & Shen, 2022). These platforms utilize AI technology to optimize English language teaching and provide students with tailored learning experiences. By integrating information technology and English curriculum, artificial intelligence serves as a tool for the optimization of secondary school English teaching in Greek schools (Li, 2017). Another case study in Greek secondary schools is the use of AI-powered learning analytics systems. These systems analyze student data to track behaviors, attendance, and assignments. This information allows educators to gain insights into student progress and customize their teaching strategies accordingly (Alshanqiti & Namoun, 2020). Implications and Future of AI in Greek Secondary Education The use of AI in Greek secondary education has significant implications for the future of teaching and learning. By harnessing AI technology, Greek schools have the potential to enhance teaching effectiveness and student engagement. Furthermore, the use of AI can provide personalized learning experiences for students, allowing them to learn at their own pace and in a way that suits their individual learning needs and preferences (Zhai et al., 2021). However, it is important to approach the use of AI in secondary education with careful consideration. Review and Recommendations for AI Integration in Greek Schools In reviewing the integration of AI in Greek secondary education, it is clear that there are both benefits and challenges to consider. The benefits of AI integration in Greek schools include the potential for personalized and adaptive learning experiences, increased efficiency in administrative tasks, and improved student outcomes (Bachmann et al., 2022). However, challenges such as teacher training and professional development, financial constraints, and ethical considerations need to be addressed for successful implementation. To effectively integrate AI into Greek secondary education, it is crucial to provide comprehensive teacher training and professional development programs (Greek Teacher Professional Development Project). Prerequisites To conduct the workshop on using AI tools in secondary schools for teachers and educators, the following prerequisites will be helpful for the participants: basic computer Πρακτικά Εργασιών 9ου Διεθνούς Συνεδρίου, για την Προώθηση της Εκπαιδευτικής Καινοτομίας, Λάρισα 20-22 Οκτωβρίου 2023, http://synedrio.eepek.gr 60 literacy, familiarity with educational technology, knowledge of pedagogical approaches, awareness of AI concepts, openness to Innovation and willingness to Collaborate. Although not mandatory, a basic understanding of AI concepts would be beneficial. Concepts such as machine learning, neural networks, and natural language processing can provide participants with a better grasp of the underlying principles behind AI tools and their potential applications in education. Collaboration among teachers and educators is crucial for successful implementation of AI tools in schools. In General, participants should: 1) have a basic understanding of computers, including how to operate them, navigate the internet, and use common software applications. 2) be familiar with educational technology tools commonly used in classrooms, such as interactive whiteboards, projectors, and learning management systems. This familiarity will provide a foundation for understanding the integration of AI tools into the existing technology ecosystem. 3) have a general understanding of different pedagogical approaches and teaching methods. This will help them contextualize how AI tools can be used to enhance teaching and learning experiences in secondary schools. 4) possess an open mindset towards embracing technological innovations and be willing to explore new ways of integrating AI tools into their teaching practices. This mindset will encourage active engagement during the workshop and a willingness to experiment with new approaches. 5) be open to collaborating with their peers, sharing ideas, and discussing potential challenges and solutions to ensure effective integration of AI tools in the classroom. Technological Requirements We will need a Projector or Display Screen, and a Presentation tool (like google slides). Also, internet access for the laboratory is needed. Depending on the number of the participants (approximately 20), we need devices such as laptops, tablets, or desktop computers to engage in hands-on activities, explore AI tools, and practice using them during the workshop. All the tools that will be demonstrated, will be hosted online, so no prior software installation is needed.
