The launch of a new broad-scope scientific medical journal in the current market, crowded with existing journals, many that are long-established, some more recent arrivals, may appear to be foolhardy. However, Academia Medicine is enthusiastically taking up this challenge, guided by two core goals: inclusiveness and quality. These ambitious but critical goals will guide the journal’s daily work and provide the philosophy that underpins the publication.

The ancient town of Si Thep, located in the western margin of the Khorat Plateau in northeast Thailand, is one of the largest and most enigmatic sites in mainland Southeast Asia, that developed between the mid-to-late first millennium CE and the thirteenth century. Excavations and archaeological surveys over the past decades have yielded important and refined Hindu‒Buddhist sculptures as well as impressive architectural remains. In addition, a significant number of ancient inscriptions have been discovered at the site, written in Sanskrit, Pali, Chinese, Old Khmer and even possibly in Old Mon. This urban centre, situated on the fringes of the so-called Indianized kingdoms of Dvāravatī and Zhenla (later Angkor), plays a fundamental role in understanding the early history of the region as an international hub for cultural exchange networks between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. The site of Si Thep was recently recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tigridiopalma magnifica Chen is an endemic, critically endangered species found only in Guangdong Province, China. Unfortunately, economic exploitation has impacted severely on its natural environments in mountain areas in recent years, disrupting fragile plant communities and sharply decreasing distribution of the species. To better protect but also allow sustainable utilization of this critically endangered ornamental plant, we report on an efficient in vitro mass propagation and plant regeneration protocol from original in vivo explants. Callus and adventitious shoot formation was induced on calyx explants incubated on induction media (Murashige and Skoog) containing thidiazuron (TDZ) alone or in combination with 6-benzyladenine (BAP). Leaf and petiole explants from in vitro grown plants also induced callus and adventitious shoot formation on induction media containing 4.4-22.0 μM TDZ alone or in combination with 2.25 μM BAP or 5.37 μM Į-napthaleneacetic acid (NAA), respectively. Our study shows that TDZ plays a crucial role in the induction of adventitious shoots from calyx, leaf and petiole explants. Once adventitious shoots were induced, shoots were able to be propagated and subcultured for mass proliferation on MS media containing 1.07 μM NAA and 4.45 μM BAP or 1.07 μM NAA and 4.6 μM cytokinin, respectively. Root formation was achieved on ½MS medium containing 0.49-4.92 μM 3-indolebutyric acid or 0.54-5.37 μM NAA; 99% of rooted plants survived establishment in soil.

Infrastructures

This study was focused on the performance of the pile force at the lateral load of an arched bridge. The effect of the compression of arch bridges creates a large horizontal load. Therefore, it is one of the most important factors in the dimensioning of piles. The study aims to make a comparative study between the results obtained in the field, and those obtained by a 3D model defined as a Finite Element (FE) of a drilled pile, subjected to different lateral loads applied at exact time intervals. Moreover, the study was intended to determine the influence of the lateral load applied to a different pile diameter using the FE model. Thus, the unified FEA software Abaqus™ by Dassault systèmes® carried out various processing procedures, namely soil FE modeling, pile FE modeling, soil-pile interface, Mesh, and boundary conditions, to carry out an effective and predictive piles behavior analysis.
