People living in rural areas of Sri Lanka are facing difficulties as wild elephants who in forest reserves entering villages. These wild elephants attack people and destroy the properties of villagers. The dump yards, garbage management areas and cultivated lands are attracting elephants for food. Elephants enter into the village from the nearby forest in search for food. The government has created the electric fence to prevent elephants from entering the village. Elephants break the electric fence and enter the village making these efforts useless. Elephant attacks have increased over the years killing humans as well as elephants. Solar based electronic fences use the principle of converting solar energy into electrical energy and giving electronic shock while touching the fences. Electronic fences are used at many places such as forest area, farm, government area etc. to protect them against animals and thefts. It consists of small components which used to convert solar energy to electrical and further will convert DC voltage to AC voltage and provide shock to the person who is touching the fences. The solar energy is converted to the electrical energy which is in the form of unregulated DC voltage. This unregulated DC voltage is converted to the regulated DC voltage and further converted to the AC voltage using inverter. As referred to the safety of people, the metallic fence of a substation is an object of special care. The substation fence is subject to a potential rise as well as to direct contact with people and animals, which is a hazardous situation. The connection of the fence to the substations grounding grid, the sectioning of the fence through isolated parts and the design of a specific fence grounding system are then necessary items for a well-designed project. This paper presents the procedure for calculating the potential rise in a metallic fence, also a report of good fence designing practices, verifying such procedure with an example from the literature.

The issue of security has become a burning topic and major concern for urban dwellers in many developing countries. The use of active security measures is no longer considered as adequate to forestall the security breaches in many public buildings. It is commonplace in urban areas in developing countries such as Nigeria to find that these public buildings having perimeter walls of solid walls. These practices constitute environmental challenges to the urban planners and the architects who design such buildings. In the case of Kigali, there has been a significant attempt to create a blend of the environment with security walls through the design of the perimeter fences of public buildings. The advantages of these concepts have different approaches which could be adapted for different situations. This article aims to examine the nature of the hybrid fences designs in use in public buildings in Kigali with the view of suggesting advantageous ones for application to ensure environmental sustainability in Nigeria. The research method adopted is a qualitative approach using case studies of selected public buildings in Kigali and buildings in Abuja, Nigeria. The design of these fences would be examined and the different options identified. A comparative analysis would be drawn from the two cities and the areas of applications of the solutions from Kigali would be proposed. The study would conclude that the approach of hybrid green fences in Kigali offers the best advantage of security as it allows for visual contact and serves as the passive role of environmental sustainability while ensuring aesthetic value for the buildings. The article would recommend that architects incorporate the concept of hybrid green fences in the overall design of the public buildings and not as a secondary development.

Electricity theft and illegal connection by ground surface conductors is a pervasive problem in South Africa. The impact this phenomenon has is not only limited to revenue loss and equipment damage, but also presents a life threatening hazard. Although the issues of non-technical losses have been researched for decades, no universal solution has been presented, due to the complexity of the problem. This paper investigates the application of zero-sequence current-based detection as a mitigation strategy to deal with illegal connections by ground surface conductors. Simulation and experimental results show the validity of this technique as well as its dependence on seasonal change of the soil resistivity.

The study was necessitated by the need to provide strategies for effective protection of electrical installations in tertiary institutions in Rivers State. Three research questions and hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The entire population of 109 security guards in tertiary institution in Rivers State was studied without sampling. A structured questionnaire validated by experts was used for data collection. Cronbach Alpha reliability method was used to establish the internal consistency of the items which yielded an overall coefficient of 0.79. Data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions while ANOVA was used to test the hypotheses at .05 level of significance.
