ABSTRACT This paper introduces project TITAN, which investigates an alternative construct of residential broadband access. The aim of the project is to increase the utilisation of deployed broadband capacity such as xDSL and cable modem connections. In order to achieve this, we propose a Collaborative Community Network (CCN) where residential broadband users contribute their spare broadband capacity to other users over a wireless medium, to form a collaborative community wireless Internet access network.

Edge computing established paradigms are prone to implicate solely powerful server-like edge nodes, in static or semi-static topologies, of centrally-controlled edge networks. In this paper, leveraging upon recent technological advancements and trends, we introduce a novel networking paradigm employing resources provided by independent crowd peers, within a zone of local proximity, to establish collaborative networks for edge computing. We call this paradigm the Crowdsourced Edge. We detail the architecture and characteristics of this novel paradigm, highlighting its unique characteristics and specific challenges, while also positioning it vis-a-vis the existing edge computing concretisations. Finally, we demonstrate the Crowdsourced Edge functionality by presenting an ongoing use case regarding a video-enhanced object search.

The NITOS wireless testbed, is one of the main building blocks in the wireless testbed experimentation, offered by the FIRE community, and a core Fed4Fire partner. Its main focus is on wireless accessed technologies and on all layers of the protocol stack. In the rapidly changing technological environment, a unique opportunity is provided to enhance the NITOS testbed with cloud computing experimentation capabilities and increase the heterogeneity and diversity of possible services that can be offered to experimenters/ developers. In this paper we describe the NITOS approach on adopting cloud technologies and SDN capabilities and how we upgrade the meaning of ”delivered service” in testbed experimentation using SOA extensions. Internet and communication technologies have lowered the costs of enabling individuals and communities to collaborate together. This collaboration has provided new services like user-generated content and social computing, as evident from success stories like Wikipedia. Through collaboration, collectively built infrastructures like community wireless mesh networks where users provide the communication network, have also emerged. Community networks have demonstrated successful bandwidth sharing, but have not been able to extend their collective effort to other computing resources like storage and processing. The success of cloud computing has been enabled by economies of scale and the need for elastic, flexible and on-demand provisioning of computing services. The consolidation of today’s cloud technologies offers now the possibility of collectively built community clouds, building upon user-generated content and user-provided networks towards an ecosystem of cloud services. We explo...
