Circular economies are particularly relevant in the context of digital devices or electric and electronic equipment (EEE). Many digital devices built using scarce and potentially toxic materials have a too-short life, instead of being repaired or reused. In addition, informal recycling of electronics in the developed and developing world has emerged as a new global environmental concern. We describe the dimensions of the problem, the challenge to move to a circular economy, and the ecology for digital devices as well as how this depends on the traceability of devices and cooperation among all stake-holders locally and globally. Moreover we examine the need for support mechanisms to facilitate, standardise, and reduce the transaction cost of the processes and increase their added value. We present eReuse.org, a set of open-source tools, procedures, open data, and services organised as a common-pool resource (CPR) to reach the circular economy of electronics through promoting reuse and ensuring traceability until recycling. Further, eReuse.org envisions empowering and engaging people around the world to create local communities that bootstrap electronic reuse and to support the development of a globally recognised reuse quality and traceability standard.

Abstract   Relationship Marketing from a Customer’s Perspective Companies need a wealth of personal data in order to address customers in a targeted manner. Utilizing IT enables them to directly address customers in order to increase sales by improving customer retention. The use of personal data becomes problematic when customers decline the use of their data. If companies ignore their customers’

How can we make citizens’ rights effective in the information society? Without a doubt, the answer is: with a wider and more direct participation by citizens. However, the development of the information society is dominated by a commercial and technical perspective that tends to be emphasised to the detriment of other perspectives that are much more important but more difficult to measure. These include: the definition of the rules of the game and the “social contract” (e.g. legal framework), as well as indicators of indirect impact such as production of and access to knowledge, changes in social relations and participation. ABSTRACT Community Clouds, usually built upon community networks, operate in a more disperse environment compared to a data center Cloud, with lower capacity and less reliable servers separated by a more heterogeneous and less predictable network interconnection. These differences raise challenges when deploying Cloud applications in a community Cloud. Open Stack Swift is an open source distributed storage system, which provides stand alone highly available and scalable storage from Open Stack Cloud computing components. Swift is initially designed as a backend storage system operating in a data center Cloud environment. In this work, we illustrate the performance and sensitivity of Open Stack Swift in a typical community Cloud setup. The evaluation of Swift is conducted in a simulated environment, using the most essential environment parameters that distinguish a community Cloud environment from a data center Cloud environment.

Nowadays cooperative web caching has shown to improve the performance in Web document access. That is why the interest in works related to web caching architectures designs has been increasing. This paper discusses and compares performances of some cooperative web caching designs (hierarchy, mesh, hybrid) using different document validation/replication methods (TTL, invalidation, pushing, etc). It is shown how the performance

This paper presents an Object Distribution System (ODS), a distributed system inspired by the ultra-large scale distribution models used in everyday life (e.g. food or newspapers distribution chains). Beyond traditional m echanisms of approaching information to readers (e.g. caching and mirroring), this s ystem enables the publication, classification and subscription to volumes of objects (e.g. documents, events). ABSTRACT Community-Lab is an open, distributed infrastructure for researchers to experiment with Community Networks, that are large scale, self-organized and decentralized networks and services built and operated by citizens for citizens. The goal of Community-Lab is to advance research and empower society by understanding and removing obstacles for these networks and services. This article outlines Community-Lab's aim, development, characteristics and infrastructure. This demonstration presents its current status of development and deployment, a sample decentralized experiment, and an invitation to the broader large-scale distributed computing research community to participate in the project through an open call.

ABSTRACT Wireless Community Networks have received increasing attention the latest years. In an effort to set the cornerstone for an internet without central authorities and monopolies, network engineers throughout the world have started creating community networks. To enhance this effort, Community-lab, a wireless community networks testbed, was created which allows researchers to experiment with new protocols and applications in a realistic environment. Nevertheless, this testbed does not offer the ability to perform L2 experiments. To address this gap, we developed a platform that allows Community-Lab researchers to perform L2 experiments. Moreover, we decided to reach our goal using Software Defined Networking(SDN) techniques, due to the attention they received lately and their promise for a complete networking solution. Overall, we propose an architecture that allows researchers to perform L2 experiments in a generic community networks testbed. To prove the feasibility of our architecture we implemented it for Community-Lab using the OpenFlow SDN protocol, enabling researchers to manage their L2 topology of their experiment.
