Landscape ecologists and planners are dealing with a largely similar area of interest. Scientists studying landscapes offer new insights about the processes acting in different spatial structures and scales. This understanding can be useful for planners who are principally involved in optimization of the use of space or the improvement of the environmental conditions. The basic key for a successful application of the scienti®c knowledge is good communication and reciprocity in understanding. The goals of landscape researchers and planners are different and so are many of their concepts and theories. Also, the time limits, the means and possibilities for realizing their objectives might be very different and follow different rules. A successful implementation of landscape ecology in practical applications of environmental and spatial planning demands careful thought how landscape ecological concepts and thoughts can be translated and communicated to people who have to consider much more aspects than just the one dealing with the landscape. Key concepts, theories and methods from landscape ecology and environmental and spatial planning are compared and evaluated. Possible connections and misunderstanding are discussed and suggestions are made to improve the interaction and to extend the interdisciplinary approach in landscape research.

The paper explains the concept of contemporary cultural ecology, a scientific approach reflecting the relationship between human society and natural environment. This approach is used by the scholars of Faculty of Arts at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. Special attention is paid to the links between cultural ecology and landscape ecology, interdisciplinary study of biophysical as well as societal driven processes and patterns in landscapes. We present important disciplines of social sciences that focused on the relationship of humans and environment, and which inspired our concept of cultural ecology. The first human ecology appears in the 1920's in Chicago. Human ecology of Robert E. Park and his colleagues was mostly aimed at urban sociology. Integrating Landscape Ecology into Natural Resource Management, 2002
Sustainability is the underlying, and the fundamental goal of this thesis proposal. Tools are needed to pursue this goal. Landscape ecology provides useful conceptual and analytical tools, particularly landscape metrics. The thesis proposes a conceptual framework for sustainable land planning (SLP) that applies ecological knowledge in land planning, applicable to all physical planning activities. It also proposes a core (sub) set of metrics, which is understood as a most useful and relevant set for SLP. A dual approach, integrating a horizontal and a vertical perspectives, help to structure and clarify why, where, how and which landscape ecological principles and metrics can most effectively assist planning. The concept of sustainable development, as approached by several sector-planning perspectives, is briefly reviewed, as the historical role of ecology in planning, ecological planning and management theories and methodologies; revisits the role of public participation, landscape ecology theory and applications, indicators, biodiversity and its methods, and finally quantitative tools for planning. All these are seen as fundamental bases for SLP. Demonstrations of this approach are included in 2 potential applications, in greenway planning and mineral resources management, and in 2 case studies, in suburban planning in the USA, and in nature conservation planning in Portugal.
