This paper will attempt to briefly discuss the ancient Greek use of metaphor to encourage awareness regarding how it can be applied towards discovering more about mankind's past. I will illustrate at least one example of how understanding the myths behind Greek classics have lead to major archaeological discoveries and provide examples of different metaphorical situations. The ancient Greeks, or the Hellenes as they called themselves, are considered to be the forebears of Western society. The influence of their culture is apparent in such institutions as museums, schools and even the alphabet. An example of our love affair with ancient Greece can be compared with the Ancient Romans, who imitated Greek art through hundreds of pottery reproductions. We do that today through our poetry, architectural achievements, and even clothing fashions as evidenced in the 1970's. Despite Western society's connection with the Greeks, however, their poetic legacy was once seriously misunderstood.
