Visual Communication Quarterly, 2021
This research brief reflects on the first 25 years of Visual Communication Quarterly (from its founding in 1994 to 2019) specifically in terms of the geographic diversity featured in its scholarship, the methods and means its authors have relied on to advance their arguments, the specific visuals under consideration, and the authors’ aims, which sometimes overlap with the visuals under consideration and sometimes are distinct from them. Insights from this review will be offered and provocations raised to inform an ongoing discussion about how the past can inform the future of our journal and what we publish in it.
Filosofija. Sociologija
Information flows, without which it is impossible to imagine a modern society and its cultural environment, penetrate into all spheres of an individual’s life thanks to digital technologies. As a result, social processes experience drastic changes in the ways and forms of cognition and transformation of the surrounding reality, as well as in the processes of formation and representation of the individual in society. As a result of the development of digital information technologies, significant changes have occurred in the living space and the perception of time by a person of the 21st century. The Internet has formed its own unique information space, with its own special social and technological characteristics. A virtual network is a space for global communication and high-speed data dissemination, as well as an environment for people’s interaction that is not limited by the barriers of traditional mass media. All this has created a new type of culture – the culture of virtual rea...
Photography has a unique indexicality in it's very nature. It has the ability to point it's finger to something that has already happened in time. Photography as an artform entered the galleries in a slow but steady pace from the mid 1950's, and was not really recognised as one before that. A question that might be argued is; what power does the photographer really have? A series of 7 photographs was produced in the UK by the undersigned, and these will be analyzed and measured in comparison to an online survey on photographic interpretation. By using the research material gathered, it will be possible to measure if the photographer has the power to encode a message or convey a feeling to the spectators. In retrospect, it will be possible to test tendencies in the questionnaire in relation to personal interpretations of the pictures. Reception theory is academically referred to as hermeneutics. This theoretical thesis attempts to find out how an audience would relate to the photographs, and to discover how the process of communication works in real life situations. Discussing the results of the survey in relation to artistic intention and personal analyzis of the pictures produced. - Contesting the theory that it is possible to encode a strong message in a visual product through semiotics. - To which extent does the products communicate the messages of the sender?
This article discusses four sources of socio-cultural reference in visual communication studies - art history, film studies, the psychology of art and visual representation, and the anthropology of visual communication - and suggests that socio-culturally nested analyses of visual texts still offer the greatest promise for illuminating the nature of pictorial communication and the particular role of visual form in media production, reception, interpretation and use. The article specifically calls for a re-invigorated use of social semiotics: analyses of cultural texts within the concrete social contexts of visual media production and reception, and with a heightened awareness of the impact of shifting technology, industrial synergy, and trans-cultural media activity.
