"After having a central role, during a great
part of the XX century, as an explanatory
system for political parties, the right/left
scale is going through a revaluation of its
explanative potential in the last 20 years.
However, this tendency towards a weakening
(or reconfiguration?) of this scale does
not have the same causes in all countries.
Besides having had a great variation
throughout history, the definition of left
and right also varies according to the historical
and cultural context of each country.
The aim of this paper is to describe the
main elements constituting these concepts
on national and international bibliography.
The applicability of the Manifestos Research
Group`s scale to the Brazilian political
parties is also discussed, and more
fruitful categories to analyse this party
system are debated."
