Vocabulary is among the difficult component for EFL students to master in learning English language. Based on a preliminary observation at a junior high school in Banda Aceh, it was found that the teachers seldom used specific strategy in teaching vocabulary. Thus, this research was aimed at finding out whether the use of Spelling Bee game can improve students' vocabulary at the school under study, with a focus on vocabulary related to nouns. The sample of this research was the seventh grade students for the one group pre-test and post-test design. To obtain data, vocabulary test items were used for the pre-test and post-test before and after the treatment was implemented. The results showed that the average post-test score is higher (88.76) than the pre-test score (62.52), so the difference between the scores of both tests is 26.24. Moreover, t-test also showed that t-score > t-table or 10.826 > 1.71 at the level of significance 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 24. Consequently, it can be concluded that the alternative hypothesis is accepted and the null hypotheses is rejected, which suggests that Spelling Bee game can improve students' vocabulary. This research examines the representations of African-American stereotype and the struggle of Black American girl in National Spelling Bee contest in Hollywood movie entitled Akeelah and the Bee (2006). The use of African-American English (AAVE) is one of the stereotype often depicted in Hollywood movie. Race theories are used to examine the relationship between race, racism and power. Meanwhile, Roland Barthes’s theory and semiotic film theory are used to examine the meaning portrayed in the movie. Findings show that the representation of Akeelah as a successful participant in the spelling bee competition challenges the stereotype of African American as academic underclass, and as associated with crime, failure and frustration. This study aimed at investigating whether or not there was a significant difference in vocabulary mastery between the students who were taught by using spelling bee game and those who were taught by using memorization through flash card. This research was quasi-experimental in nature. This study was conducted in pre-test and post-test design. The population was students of the fourth grade in elementary school in SD Negeri 3 Banjar Jawa. Random Sampling was assigned to determine the samples of the study. There were 30 students in Class A as the experimental group which was taught by using spelling bee game and 30 students in Class B as the control group which was taught by using memorization through flash card. This research aimed to find out whether a spelling bee game can increase students’ vocabulary or not and to find out the effectiveness of a spelling bee game to increase students’ vocabulary. The research method was classroom action research which consisted of cycles. The research location was in SMPN 1 Banyuputih. The data collection instruments were observation, documentation, questionnaire, and trial questions—furthermore, the data were analysed by qualitative descriptive and comparative descriptive. The conclusions of this research were spelling bee games can increase students’ vocabulary with the comparison test values 57,8 (Pre-test), 68,9 (Post-test 1), and 84,0 (Post-test 2). This game was also effective, it showed by the students’ activity observations results of 73% (1stmeeting), 75% (2ndmeeting), 77% (3rdmeeting), and 92% (4thmeeting) in a series.
