The overall profile has been made, over the past 42 years, of three major fields of interest: First: A progressive involvement in academic research and teaching on issues pertaining to the formation of Muslim thought in classical times. Questions dealing with early Muslim dogma, creeds, theology and sects, were addressed. So were the issues related to Muslim law, scholarship, classical Literature, Qur'anic and Hadith Sciences. In the few recent years, more focus has been made on the formation of the Vulgate according to San'a Qur'anic manuscripts. This academic interest has shaped the profile in re-understanding contemporary issues challenging Muslim societies. Appropriation(s) of the past, approaches to Modernity, reformist thinking, Gender in Muslim contexts, and emerging religious minorities in Muslim societies, are but few matters that have been critically analysed to comprehend the underlying politics and strategies aiming at bringing change to contemporary Muslim societies.

With new topics and contributions, this updated second edition discusses the history and contemporary presence of Islam in Europe and America. The book debates the relevance and multifaceted participation of Muslims in the dynamics of Western societies, challenging the changing perception on both sides. Collating over 30 chapters, written by experts from around the world, the volume presents a wide range of perspectives. Case studies from the Muslim presence in the Iberian Peninsula between the Middle Ages and the modern age set off the Handbook, along with an outline of Muslims in America up to the twentieth century. The second part covers concepts around new conditions in terms of consolidating identities, the emergence of new Muslim actors, the appearance of institutions and institutional attitudes, the effects of Islamic presence on the arts and landscapes of the West, and the relational dynamics like ethics and gender. Exploring the influence of Islam, particularly its impact on society, culture and politics, this interdisciplinary volume is a key resource for policymakers, academics and students interested in the history of Islam, religion and the contemporary relationship between Islam and the West.
Sufism, the spiritual tradition of Islam, is undergoing a period of renewal with charismatic leaders attracting new disciples from diverse social and cultural backgrounds. Global Sufi leaders and public figures, both in Europe and North Africa, are promoting a debate on religious and social gender norms, emphasising the importance of both religious freedom and adherence to Islamic values. These Sufi leaders do not impose a specific perspective. In fact, liberal and conservative, and secular and religious positions coexist in the debate involving veiled and unveiled women, feminists and non-feminists. The study day will explore the boundaries between the secular and the religious by raising issues such as: how do Sufi women worldwide conceptualise freedom and adherence to Islamic values? How do they embody Islamic values and norms? The event has been organised in collaboration with Ca’ Foscari University, Venice Curators: Francesco Piraino (Ca’ Foscari University) Feyza Burak-Adli (Northwestern University) M. Shobhana Xavier (Queen’s University)
