For people conscious and critical of their settler-colonial immigration heritage, the desire to forge and claim a deep connection with a plot of land can generate deep ambivalence. Engaging with Wall Kimmerer's reflections on indigeneity and migration, this essay explores the ways in which embodied and material practices of gardening and caring for the soil enable visceral recognition of both the urgency for – and the challenges associated with – decolonizing relationships with morethan-human beings that have been subjugated in diverse ways through colonial capitalism over time and space.

Caos e Retorica2006 •
International Conference: Sinicizing the Early Modern World - Histories and Interpretations Beyond Euro-Diffusionism
International Conference: Sinicizing the Early Modern World - Histories and Interpretations Beyond Euro-Diffusionism2023 •
Scholars have deeply researched Europe’s historical impacts upon China. A distinguished and decades-old - but still rather limited - field has undertaken research in the other direction, noting that China has also influenced its neighbors, Europe, and the wider world in turn. Nonetheless, this perspective remains dispersed, eclectic, and little-theorized. This gathering’s questions will extend in two directions: the historicization and theorization of what one might call ‘early modern Sinicization.’ Unearthing the many types of ‘reverse diffusionism’ in which Chinese practices spread to the world has rich explanatory promise, and may even be essential in achieving a more balanced understanding of causation in global history. On the one hand, this conference invites scholarship which explores how regions close and far from China transformed, adapted to, and struggled against Sinicization in the so-called early modern period. On the other hand, this conference also invites reflections on how to characterize ‘Sinicization’ itself. This conference brings together early-career scholars, mid-career researchers, and renowned professors at the University of Tübingen. Presentations will span the years 1600-1900, covering a wide range of political and spatial topics - including Manchu China, Orochen polities, Chosŏn Korea, Dutch and Makatao indigenous Taiwan, Spanish Manila, Dutch Batavia, Enlightenment France, and Victorian Germany, England, and Ireland. Day 1 (June 15, 2023): David Porter, Opening Lecture Panel 1:Chinese-Iberian Contacts and Manila Presentation 1: Rachel Zhang, "The First Sangley Poetry: Diego de Rueda y Mendoza in Manila, 1622” Presentation 2: Juan Gil-Osle, “Luzon at the Center of Global Schemes: The Quest for the Strait of Anian from Both Sides of the Pacific Ocean” Panel 2: Chinese-Iberian Commercial Transformations Presentation 1: Adrian Masters, “On Non-Liberal Genealogies of Toleration, or how Chinese Merchants Made Catholic Manila Tolerant, 1593-1662* Presentation 2: Presentation 2: Guillermo Ruiz-Stovel, “Catholic Exclusion & the Rise and Fall of Chinese Manila's Cross-Cultural Brokers, 1684-1783” Panel 3: Novel Encounters in the East China Sea Presentation 1: Tim Brook, “Learning to Trade: The Initiation of English Merchants into East Asian Business Practices” Presentation 2: Raymond Dayi Hsu, “Reimagining Early Modern Sinicization through Indigenous Activism: Cultural Revival & Political Struggle of the Makatao People in Taiwan” Day 2 (June 16, 2023): Panel 4: Sinicization and China's Northern Neighbors Presentation 1: Youngmin Kim, “Sinicization & its Critics: Moving Beyond the Impasse” Presentation 2: Elvin Meng, “Form & Content in Manchu Print/Manuscript Culture; Or, If Not Sinicization, What For Were Translations?"
