Oxford Handbook of Pauline Studies
OHPS Paul the Convert2022 •
'Paul the "Convert"?' has three goals: to track the history of this construction of Paul from its origins in antiquity through to the present; to examine scholarly assessments of its utility; and to offer a synthetic historical account of how and why Paul acted as he did to either side of his affiliation with the Jesus movement. In various sections the chapter ex amines the fundamental contributions of Munck, Stendahl, and Dahl and those of E. P. Sanders and James Dunn; the work of Alan Segal, Daniel Boyarin, and N. T. Wright; and the proposals of Gaston, Gager, and Stowers. Finally, the chapter explores newer work ar guing that both the content and the context of Paul's mission to pagans continued to be Second Temple Judaism, inflected through the peculiar eschatology of the Jesus move ment. For this reason, the essay concludes, Paul's transformative moment is best concep tualized as his 'call'.
The Circum-Aegean world is at the same time part of the Mediterranean and separated from it by large islands. This interactive space that formed around the Aegean Sea offered many advantages to seafaring peoples since Mesolithic times or even before: a well-connected and authentic place where not only people and materials, but, above all, ideas circulated rapidly. Since the Mesolithic, and especially with the Neolithic way of life, interactions between its eastern and western parts resulted in a material and immaterial culture distinguishable from the surrounding areas. Nevertheless, the Circum-Aegean is far from being a uniform space, since there are numerous differences traceable between the various regions, such as the islands, the Anatolian coast and the Greek mainland. Through new research carried out in recent years in especially in the eastern Aegean area (in Anatolia) but also in the west (in Macedonia and Thessaly), another aspect has become even clearer: the possibility of defining inside the broader regions local styles in pottery production and material culture. In this session, we aim to discuss both the beginnings of the Neolithic way of life against the background of the Mesolithic, as well as the subsequent transformations culminating in the early/mid sixth millennium BC. Special attention shall be given to the internal dynamics within the Aegean and the exchange with the surrounding areas: on the Anatolian side with the Marmara region up to the Bosporus in the north and with the Lake District down to the Mediterranean coast in the south; on the European side via river systems with the north and northwest. The session welcomes contributions on material culture, chronology and terminology, various aspects of regional cultures and interregional networks. As it is not possible to adequately study the Circum-Aegean Neolithic without interdisciplinary approaches, we explicitly welcome presentations on environmental aspects, archaeometry and bioarchaeology. In this way, we aim to highlight the originality of Aegean Neolithic societies in their various aspects.
Analele Banatului
Din colecțiile Muzeului Național al Banatului din Timișoara. III. Depozitul de bronzuri de la Banatski Karlovac (Nagykárolyfalva/Karlsdorf), Serbia2022 •
The bronze hoard at Banatski Karlovac (Nagykárolyfalva/Karlsdorf, opš. Alibunar, South Banat District, Vojvodina, Serbia) was discovered in 1896 on the plateau at the northern edge of the town towards the Aibunar marsh (Fig. 2). From what F. Milleker found out, there would have been a total of 32 pieces: 17 socketed axes, 10 anklets, 1 bracelet, 2 spearheads, an „arm guard” and a possible helmet decoration. They were shared between the landowner and the workers, 8 pieces arriving at the museum in Vršac and 5 pieces at the museum in Timişoara. A first, more detailed publication of the Banatski Karlovac bronze hoard is due to R. Rašajski. He will describe and illustrate 9 objects (5 socketed axes, 3 leg bracelets and the „arm guard „) from the collections of the museum in Vršac and 8 socketed axes from the collections of the Banat museum in Timişoara (Fig. 5). In this article, due to the mistakes regarding the dimensions and the drawing of the pieces in R. Rašajski’s work, we resume the publication of the 8 socketed axes from Banatski Karlovac that are kept in the collections of the museum in Timişoara (inv. no. IV – 6147, Pl. I/1; IV – 1491, Pl. I/2; IV – 1489, Pl. I/3; IV – 1492, Pl. I/4; IV – 1488, Pl. I/5; IV – 1490, Pl. I/6; IV – 1493, Pl. I/2; IV – 1494, Pl. II/3). To these are added a spearhead (IV – 1487, Pl. I/1), otherwise mentioned in specialized literature without having been illustrated, and 2 socketed axes (inv. no. IV – 6145, Pl. II/4; IV – 6146, Pl. II/5). The belonging of the 2 socketed axes to the Banatski Karlovac bronze hoard is recorded in the inventory register IV of the museum in Timişoara (Fig. 6). The finds from the Banatski Karlovac bronze hoard, in the absence of other more reliable dating elements, may cover a longer period of time. That is why it seems reasonable to place it in the so‑called Late Bronze II and III of the relative chronology of the eastern Carpathian Basin (Bz Bz C2/D-Ha A). The cultural milieu in which the pieces of the Banatski Karlovac bronze hoard circulated until the time of their deposition in the ground is suggested by some older or newer finds made in the same area where this hoard was discovered (Fig. 7). However, it is about that characteristic Late Bronze Age II horizon (Bz C2/Bz D and the beginning of the Ha A1 phase) in the low plain of Banat which has been attributed to the so‑called Cruceni-Belegiš II ceramic style.

Slope stability analysis for undrained loading conditions1993 •
The current state of art for limit equilibrium analysis of slope stability problems lacks a satisfactory procedure for stability evaluation under general, rapid (undrained) loading conditions. Some procedures are available for the analysis of rapid drawdown, but these suffer from several shortcomings and, furthermore, are not applicable to other types of rapid loading. An approach is presented which overcomes these limitations. The approach integrates four components-establishment of soil behaviour on the basis of laboratory testing, estimation of steady-state conditions in the slope using a boundary value analysis, estimation of distribution of undrained strength in the slope using undrained stress paths, and identification of the critical slip surface followed by calculation of its factor of safety. The approach is illustrated through its application to the stability analysis of an earth dam under rapid drawdown and earthquake conditions.
