The relations between Roman and Barbarian civilizations were characterized by prolonged conflict, but also by highly significant exchanges, mutual influence, acculturation, and the emergence of unexpected and enduring consequences in the history of Western Europe. It is in this encounter between civilizations and cultures that the roots of Western Europe are deeply embedded. Amidst such complex circumstances, the best diplomatic and cultural forces were employed, with figures like Boethius and Cassiodorus, alongside the pastoral care of the bishops, who largely shared the socio-cultural milieu with the Italian and provincial aristocracies. Despite the determined efforts of great rulers like Theoderic, achieving and maintaining European political equilibrium and peace remained a challenging goal. The only viable approach to ensuring such peace, then as well as now, is the promotion of mutually collaborative relationships rather than subjugation to a hegemonic power.
