This can be reflected by Mr B wanting to make a drink for his friend who visited him. It is Mr B choice and he has a right to do it and on the other hands, it is a dilemma if on the process of promoting his independence, he spills hot water and scalds himself or the friends whilst pouring the tea. It is Mr B right to take this risk and I as a support worker owe him duty of care to ensure he does not harm himself. Also an individual Mr F care plan says that he will be hoisted to use the commode because of his condition. Mr F who has a right to choose what he want, refuses to be hoisted. There are conflicts and dilemma as it is my responsibility to ensure I follow what is in the care plan when supporting Mr F which is to hoist him to use the commode. Mr F on the other hand does not want to be hoisted which is his choice and he has a right to say it. 2.2 Describe how to manage risks associated with conflicts or dilemmas between an individual’s rights and the duty of care The conflicts and dilemma described above can be managed by explaining to Mr F the implications of not following what his care plan says. Mr F will be encouraged by explaining to him the reason for using the hoist. If still does not want, Mr F will be given some time and would be asked again later to be hoisted. If Mr F declined, then a report of what happened will be reported and documented. 2.3 Explain where to get additional support and advice about conflicts and dilemmas I could get additional support and advice about conflicts and dilemma from the individuals’ family, senior member of staffs, my manager, social worker or other professionals. I could find out from the company policies and procedures. 3 Know how to respond to complaints 3.1 Describe how to respond to complaints If there is any complaint, I will ensure that the individual knows my company’s complaints policy and understands how to use it. I will listen to the complaint and record the information. I will explain how complaints policy works and give the complainant time and respect I will offer the individual support in following the complaint policy. I will advise my manager about the complaints who uses the company complaint policy and procedures to handle it. There was an issue of Miss B complaining of noise from Mister A. I listened to Miss B and assured her that her complaint will be attended to. Miss B complaint was recorded and documented. 3.2 Explain the main points of agreed procedures for handling complaints Complaint policy is recorded and documented procedure that is readily available in the form of leaflets, posters, complaint form, both web-based and printed. Agreed procedure is to explain how complaint policy works and when to expect response. Complaint policy is time-based and complaint is dealt with in a documented time-frame. Complaint is dealt with by nominated members of staff or a manager. Complaint procedure is clear and easy to understand.
