“Dissed”: The Removal of Black Educators from the American Schoolhouse2021 •
For almost a decade, the teaching profession has seen a drastic shortage of black educators. The closing of many schools in urban areas has helped reduce the number of black educators. Also, evaluative protocols and rubrics applied to measure effective teaching practices harbor biased lenses that impact how black educators maintain their employment status to succeed in the profession. Without promoting recruitment and retention interventions and culturally applied methods to assess teacher effectiveness, fewer students will have an opportunity to experience black educators in their lifetime. The research paper used a critical race and culturally responsive theoretical framing to review the research literature to determine how black educators receive evaluations and become dismissed from public schools.

Abstract Near the end of a master’s in education program through the University of Phoenix some questions that have arisen due to my own search for role models for myself as a future Black male educator. In my research I have found that beyond school closings that began in the 1950’s, the testing that is currently used to certify teachers may be inconsistent in regard to teachers of color. Also I have found that there is a need for school systems to stabilize the balance of the numbers minority students to teachers in their schools. Schools have begun recruitment of teachers that do not draw teachers of color who identify with their race. This needs to be changed. Instead schools assimilate teachers of color into the standards of the school system. If there is a need for female teachers to identify with the growing numbers of female college students you don’t ask her to tone down her female qualities to adapt to the school. This is the case for male teachers of color. The intent of this paper is to show how historically educational incentives have been drawn away from Black communities. Also the intent of this paper is to show statistically how current state testing is keeping minorities out of the teaching field. Finally, the intend of this paper is to show how the recruitment that has taken place has not developed teachers of color, but yet, town down teachers in fear of identifying with their race. The goal is that 1) this paper will effect a change that will bring schools back to black communities where they began. 2) State testing will be re-assessed to the point of its reshaping to address all socio-economic classes of teachers. And 3) that a common ground will be laid so that teachers are taught to draw from there life experience as much as they draw from curriculum experience.

There is a need to examine the implications of the apparent unanimity by researchers and practitioners about recruiting and retaining teachers of color. In particular, the push for diversifying the teaching force must be scrutinized within the context of larger patterns and structures of racial injustice and should be pursued as part of broader efforts toward equity-oriented school reform. How might we acknowledge and work toward the important task of diversifying the educator workforce and still maintain healthy skepticism about the confluence of actors with differing motivations who are promoting educational reform, including actors who effectively devalue and dehumanize communities of color? We propose two principles when considering the diversification of the educator workforce: (1) specifying the need for and possibilities of strategic essentialism, and (2) keeping the focus on transforming schools. Flowing from the two principles, we offer a set of questions that educational stakeholders concerned with the diversification of the teaching force should consider. These questions should be employed when stakeholders consider or implement efforts to diversify a school’s educational workforce.
As federal, state, and local policy makers, as well as institutions of higher education and foundations industriously search for new initiatives to increase the diversity of the teaching workforce – they may well benefit from, first, understanding the experiences of male teachers of color.
