The African catfish Clarias gariepinus has been introduced for aquaculture in Bangladesh due to the scarcity of indigenous C. batrachus fingerlings. However, the government of Bangladesh has banned the farming of C. gariepinus due to the carnivorous nature of this species. Recently C. gariepinus has been reported by fish farmers and consumers in Bangladesh, and unplanned hybridization between native and exotic species has been suspected. This study attempts to know the purity of C. batrachus by analyzing mitochondrial genes. Both directly sequenced and retrieved Cytochrome C Oxidase subunit I (COI) and cytochrome b (Cytb) genes from C. gareipinus and C. batrachus were analyzed by MEGA software. The morphologically dissimilar C. batrachus showed the least genetic distance (0.295) from C. gariepinus, which provided evidence of hybridization between the two species. Introduction: Owing to the increasing use of organic dyes, the biosynthesis of metal oxide nanocatalysts is urgently needed as an economical and environmentally friendly solution to reduce their waste release. Method: In this study, we synthesized copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) by the sol-gel method using Croton macrostachyus leaf extracts as capping and reducing agents. The biosynthesized CuO catalysts were characterized using X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), thermogravimetric differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Result: The result showed that the synthesized CuO NPs had a crystallite size of about 9 nm and had good crystalline texture. Furthermore, the catalyst showed the best catalytic reduction performance in 1 min for methylene blue (MB) and 3 min for methyl orange (MO). Furthermore, the CuO catalyst synthesized using Croton macrostachyus leaf extract resulted in apparent rate constant (Kapp) values for MB and MO of 0.06793 s-1 and 0.01877 s-1 , respectively. Discussion: the recyclability of the CuO catalyst was investigated, and it was shown that the catalysts are suitable for reuse in dye reduction. Therefore, the catalytic activity of this study suggests that the CuO nanocatalysts prepared in this work are a potential candidate for controlling organic pollutants or trace amounts of naturally occurring active organic chemicals in all environmental dye wastes.

Dengan kondisi geografis sebagai bentang alam karst tropis, Pulau Nusa Penida memiliki karakteristik yang unik untuk dikaji. Keterkaitan antara aspek vegetasi hingga kondisi tanah, erat kaitannya dengan ketersediaan air permukaan, khususnya pada bentang alam karst tropis seperti di Nusa Penida. Hal ini perlu segera dipahami mengingat tantangan untuk menghadapi perubahan iklim yang saat ini sedang terjadi. Dalam studi ini dilakukan analisis interelasi pada ragam normalized difference index, meliputi Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), Normalized Difference Moisture Index (NDMI), Bare Soil Index (BSI), dan Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI). Data diperoleh dari citra satelit Harmonized Sentinel-2 MSI dengan tutupan awan < 5% saat musim kemarau Agustus 2020 dan musim penghujan Mei 2022. Kajian data tersebut ditunjang dengan analisis statistik meliputi uji regresi, matriks korelasi, dan Principal Component Analysis (PCA) menggunakan RStudio. Studi lapangan turut dilakukan untuk mengkonfirmasi bentang alam karst yang signifikan merepresentasikan nilai indeks yang dianalisis. Hasil studi kami menunjukan bahwa pada lingkungan karst di Nusa Penida, terdapat relasi yang lebih kuat dan berbanding terbalik antara nilai NDMI dan NDVI ataupun SAVI, diikuti dengan pola yang sama antara nilai BSI dan NDWI. Hasil studi ini mengkonfirmasi bahwa nilai-nilai indeks yang dikaji merespon kondisi monsoonal di Nusa Penida, baik saat musim kemarau dan penghujan. Curah hujan monsoonal memiliki peran yang signifikan pada ketersediaan air tanah pada lapisan epikarst, sehingga secara langsung berdampak pada perubahan tutupan vegetasi, kelembaban permukaaan tanah, dan distribusi tanah tandus di Nusa Penida. Secara lebih jauh, nilai ilmiah dalam studi ini telah memberikan perspektif terkini untuk memahami lingkungan karst tropis di Indonesia. Pengembangan studi ini dapat mengarah pada landasan studi untuk memonitoring dan menyusun perencanaan mitigasi resiko kekeringan jangka panjang akibat perubahan iklim yang saat ini sedang terjadi.
