Cognitive mapping might be considered as an essential element of pre design/ post design phase for public spaces. Cognitive maps can be defined as a category of mental representation and concepts that are built to visualize and obtain information. The reason why people use cognitive mapping is to create an opportunity to represent their experiences about their environment. Public spaces provide a space in which people can come in contact with the social world outside and experience the opportunity of being with, seeing and hearing others which instills stimulation. This paper aims towards the role of cognitive mapping in spaces for public use. Besides, the relevance and impact of Cognitive Mapping in Public spaces is also discussed. The five principles of Kevin Lynch i.e. paths, nodes, districts, edges and landmarks are considered for understanding the impact of cognitive mapping in spaces for public use. Thereafter, the Influence of Cognitive Mapping in determining success / failure of a Public Spaces is also looked upon. Next, two cases of Mexico City and Melbourne, involving cognitive mapping in places for public use is mentioned to understand the practical implications of the topic. Lastly, observations from primary survey/exercise for understanding cognitive mapping in spaces for public use undertaken by the authors have been mentioned. These primary studies had been done in Jodhpur, Chandigarh and Visakhapatnam. The inferences and facts from the paper might be used by architects and planners to understand the considerations to be taken before starting to visualize a successful public place.
In order to be consumption there should be services that answer to the needs of the targeted consumers. Public spaces as a product of city actors are supposed to offer a range of uses satisfying and accessible to all the public otherwise, we can no longer talk about public spaces but rather collective spaces. Here resides the challenge of discerning the needs of the public in the city in what concerns uses of public spaces. A bigger challenge is having the means or tools to figuring them out in the beginning. Researches in urban studies offer a plethora of tools of investigation for assessment of the performance of urban spaces and in particular public spaces. Such an assessment can be subject to various perceptions that differ from designer and user even between designers and also between users for a variety of backgrounds and characteristics (education, culture, sex, psychology…etc). Mental maps were used in works of eminent researches in the fields of urban studies and also environmental psychology and led to revolutionizing theories on urban space's perception and the interaction individual-environment. This article presents a form of mental maps and shares an experience that deals with the imageability of Jijel's city center's public spaces. Key words: Mental map-public space-Jijel's city center-assessment of the performance of urban spaces.
The Visual Identity of open spaces results from our cognitive image. This can be the result of both physical and non-physical ties to the landscape change. It affects users' perception and provokes their senses. Recent researchers revealed there is a gap between the intended design developed by the urban designer and the users' cognitive map of the space. The research aims to determine the most important factors that the urban designer should keep into consideration to reduce this gap. The research used semi-structured interviews & mapping tool to analyse the landscape change over the past 10 years for open space food courts in three new residential communities in Egypt. The result presents a comparison between the three perspectives for landscape change; 1) theoretical guidelines for designing urban space elements, 2) urban designer's design approach and 3) users' cognitive map for open spaces. This method can be used to convey, share and exchange information for landscape designers, urban planners and decision makers.
The dependence on cars for urban mobility and the exponential increase in traffic and urban infrastructure to sustain traffic have lead to an encapsulated way of life, where the connection with the natural environment is much more reduced and programmed. In a previous study, a process based on estimating distances showed that children who move around their city by automobile do not appreciate their environment as a spatial continuum, but rather as a series of independent spaces that are reached by automobile or bus, thereby evidencing a different way of conceptualizing urban space in the light of different cognitive structures (Goluboff, Garca-Mira, and Garca-Fontn, 2002). The present study is concerned with the process of understanding and knowledge of urban space, and contrasting the cognitive structure of different groups. The implications that this study may have for urban planning are discussed.

A Review of Mental Urbanscape* Using Map-Based Methods (Case study: Tehran Ferdowsi Square)2016 •
As a medium between people and the city, urbanscape makes a mental connection between individuals and their surroundings. It is usually difficult to conceive this mental relationship and its corresponding processes with usual methods. This study seeks to address the mental aspects of urbanscape and highlight its role and importance by using an innovative method. In this study, map-based methods have been examined as one of the most effective tools for studying citizens’ urbanscape. Indeed, using maps provides a tangible model of the city and its spatial imagination by mapping people’s perceptions. In order to achieve the hidden layers of people’s perceptions, a combination of map-based methods have been examined in the study of Ferdowsi Square in Tehran. First, 50 questionnaires in which interviewees were asked to draw remarkable element of the area were conducted (cognitive map). Second, people were asked to mark the places that are meaningful for them in a provided map of the area...

Being basic concern of urban design education, urban space, can be defined as a livable and perceivable multi-dimensional place that is also has time content. It is formed by buildings, perceived by city-dwellers and has many interrelated urban activities in it. After researches, it can be seen that there has been many approaches that form a basis for urban design education. Among these approaches, this study focuses on cognitive and psychological approaches of urban space which have a great importance in urban design. From this point of view, because of affecting human behavior and activities and considerably important for giving clues to urban designers, the concepts of perceiving space, image ability, spatial legibility and cognitive maps that concretize these mental images or in other words turned these images into drawings were defined in the study. Subject of the study was evaluated within objective and subjective viewpoints. This study chose Selcuk University Campus as a sample area in which we work as an educator and which is the living space of many students. The aim of the study is to find out the undergraduate students' perceptions and images related to Campus Area in which the students gain experiences every day and in accordance with the results to obtain design clues for Selcuk University Campus Area. For attaining this goal, we searched how the spatial image changes by students' individual perception? Which spaces in the area are more easily-remembered than the others? Which are preferable and admirable spaces or not for students? Sampling ratio of the study is approximately %15 (30 undergraduate students) within the students who took an urban design education and live in the campus area. Producing cognitive maps of these students and interpreting them by using Kevin Lynch's (1960) 'cognitive urban image' and Jack L. Nasar's (1997) 'evaluative urban image' elements are the methods of the study. In conclusion; after obtaining and analyzing the cognitive maps, we got some important design clues to produce successful urban spacesfor Selcuk University Campus Area.

This study examines the veridicality of the mental maps of 100 residents of the town of Gianyar. In this case the veridicality measured was the level of accuracy of the Balinese worldview and cosmology captured by the mental maps. The information is useful for the urban design purposes, particularly as inputs in the maintenance of the cultural continuity of the Balinese urban environments.

Public open spaces have always been considered as a focal point of the city as it describes the distinctive character of public life. There are in-numerous cities which are known for their public life while few cities are still struggling to satisfy their users need in public open spaces. Various researchers have defined distinctive factors to assess public open spaces whereas fewer attempted to analyze through users perception. Therefore, this paper attempts to analyze the user perception regarding different attributes of public open space in New Delhi, India in order to validate the present designed space in respect of users need. Three public open spaces from New Delhi, India involved in this study, conducted through survey a using questionnaire. The questionnaire design is based on 'Likert scale' ranging from 1 to 5 which is further analyzed by a basic statistical method. The analysis demonstrates that user's satisfaction level is divergent from present design spaces which leads to ineffective public open space. The result indicates that uses and activities, microclimate, maintenance and security are below the user's expectation level while access and linkages and visual identity are acceptable.
