Notions of resistance, alongside fears and realities of oppression, resound throughout Jewish history. As a minority, Jews express their political aspirations, ideals of heroism, and yearnings of retaliation and redemption in their rituals, art, and everyday life. Centering on coins in The Magnes Collection, this exhibition explores how the Jewish revolts against Hellenism and the Roman occupation of Palestine (Judaea Capta) echo from antiquity into the present. Pièces de Résistance highlights a variety of collection items ranging from ancient coins and their replicas, to ritual objects for Purim and Hanukkah. It also prominently features art by Marc Chagall, Lazar Krestin, and Arthur Szyk that offer a modern visual representation of Jewish might in the face of persecution.

The occasion of marking seventy years since the establishment of the State of Israel calls for a reconsideration of the complex relations between Zionism, Jewish statehood, and Reform Judaism. In terms of their initial political orientation, Reform ideology and Zionism were strongly opposed Jewish responses to modernity: the first pinned its hopes on emancipation and the prospects of integration as a minority in a liberal society, whereas the later disregarded that possibility and called for the eventual realization of Jewish statehood. Especially since the pivotal moment of 1948 but also prior to that, attempts have been made to reconcile these two worldviews and bridge the gap between the different modes of Jewish existence they represent. One such bridge builder, a tragic one nevertheless, was Rabbi Judah Leib Magnes. In his attempts to reconcile Reform Zionism with the political realities of pre-state Israel, he reveals a tension that prevails till our times (albeit in different form). That is: these two Jewish responses to modernity—Reform Judaism and Zionism—differ not only in their political ramifications, but also in terms of their religious predicaments. Early Zionism was by and large a secular project, a fact that many American Zionists of the time found difficult to come to terms with.
