The chapter will address the notion of embodiment from a neuroscientific perspective, by emphasizing the crucial role played by bodily relations and sociality on the evolution and development of distinctive features of human cognition. The neurophysiological level of description is here accounted for in terms of bodily-formatted representations and discussed by replying to criticisms recently raised against this notion. The neuroscientific approach here proposed is critically framed and discussed against the background of the Evo-Devo focus on a little explored feature of human beings in relation to social cognition: their neotenic character. Neoteny refers to the slowed or delayed physiological and/or somatic development of an individual. Such development is largely dependent on the quantity and quality of interpersonal relationships the individual is able to establish with her/his adult peers. It is proposed that human neoteny further supports the crucial role played by embodiment, here spelled out by adopting the explanatory framework of embodied simulation, in allowing humans to engage in social relations, and make sense of others' behaviors. This approach can fruitfully be used to shed new light onto non propositional forms of communication and social understanding and onto distinctive human forms of meaning making, like the experience of man-made fictional worlds.

What can Neuro-Psychoanalysis and Affective Neurosciences add to our Understanding of the Relational Dimensions of our Mind? (Atena Editora), 2024
As group analysts and analytical group psychotherapists, we seek to understand how therapeutic and/or non-therapeutic groups will generate, create and express themselves through different levels of communication and interpersonal relationships, as well as at the transpersonal level (group field), which are deeply influenced and interdependent on the different personal and group matrices. The author will share with you some of his reflections on neuroscientific and neuropsychoanalytic contributions and updates regarding the current understanding of the functioning of the Human Mind, contributing to a better understanding of how group processes impact Individual Minds and the interaction styles of group members, based on proposals and contributions from several authors in Neuro-Psychoanalysis and Groupanalysis. The group is nothing more than a sounding board and an amplification of interactions between Individual Minds supported by the intuitions, deductions and assessments that each of the group members exposes in verbal and non-verbal communications articulated with the individual capacities to feel, empathize, interact and, finally, to understand and recognize.

Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences, 2012
There is a growing realization in cognitive science that a theory of embodied intersubjectivity is needed to better account for social cognition. We highlight some challenges that must be addressed by attempts to interpret ‘simulation theory’ in terms of embodiment, and argue for an alternative approach that integrates phenomenology and dynamical systems theory in a mutually informing manner. Instead of ‘simulation’ we put forward the concept of the ‘extended body’, an enactive and phenomenological notion that emphasizes the socially mediated nature of embodiment. To illustrate the explanatory potential of this approach, we replicate an agent-based model of embodied social interaction. An analysis of the model demonstrates that the extended body can be explained in terms of mutual dynamical entanglement: inter-bodily resonance between individuals can give rise to self-sustaining interaction patterns that go beyond the behavioral capacities of isolated individuals by modulating their intra-bodily conditions of behavior generation.
