[Call for Papers] The Sea and its Spaces in History and Philosophy from Antiquity to Modern Times (Bari 12th - 14th September 2024) The Ph.D. candidates of the graduate program in Patrimoni Storici e Filosofici per una Innovazione Sostenibile at the University of Bari are glad to invite Ph.D. students and researchers in the Humanities (no more than 3 years from Ph.D. completion) to submit their proposals to the International Conference "The Sea and its Spaces in History and Philosophy from Antiquity to Modern Times (Bari, 12th - 14th September 2024). The Conference aims to reflect on the topic of the sea as a space of mobility and connection of cultures, conflict, and recognition through an interdisciplinary perspective. By taking a shared object of investigation, the aim is to foster dialogue between the scientific methods and knowledge expertise inherent to History and Philosophy. As stated in the attached call for papers, applications should be sent no later than May 31st, 2024. The Conference will end with a panel discussion on the socio-political role of graduate students in the Humanities and the role of their methods and skills in contemporary society. For further information, feel free to contact phd.patrimonistoriciefilosofici@gmail.com.

Selfhood should not be lost or displaced when receiving any type of diagnosis. The Borromean knot of psychoanalysis, psychology, and psychiatry is comprised of these three disciplines being intertwined without being the same. In every instance possible I will showcase examples where we should take into account differences in ability, differences in experience, and overall differences in selves to understand wellness in a more inclusive light. The objective is to highlight how these three disciplines have had a history of marginalizing people, especially people of color, gay and trans people, people in psychotic states, and the people lowly suited in the socioeconomic spheres. The authoritarian power of mental health care, which I will characterize as one that creates a singular type of self who can tap into wellness, promotes very few ways in which one can be healthy, and a plethora of ways one can be ill. Instead of adhering to these norms, I will highlight how these same norms which cultivate singularity of health, have perpetuated loss of selfhood and perpetuated illness itself. We must find other ways in which we could connect different selves within the network of illness and propose newer, more patientcentered models of healthcare, especially mental healthcare, that account for patient agency, autonomy, and authenticity, which I will prove to be very relevant values in proper and diligent care of patients. Through authors and philosophers like Michel Foucault, Audre Lorde, and Susan Sontag, I will set the framework with which the history of authoritarian models of health and healthcare have established themselves within models of selfhood and vice versa. Through more contemporary writers like Daniel Brudney, John Lantos, and Alison Kafer, I will start imagining a framework more inclusive and aligned with patient-first language, that could ultimately seep into all of psychoanalysis, psychiatry, and psychology.

Design culture for Sustainable urban artificial intelligence: Bruno Latour and the search for a different AI urbanism2024 •
The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between AI urbanism and sustainability by drawing upon some key concepts of Bruno Latour’s philosophy. The idea of a sustainable AI urbanism - often understood as the juxtaposition of smart and eco urbanism - is here critiqued through a reconstruction of the conceptual sources of these two urban paradigms. Some key ideas of smart and eco urbanism are indicated as incompatible and therefore the fusion of these two paradigms is assessed as an unstable basis for shaping sustainable AI urbanism. The concepts in question - modernity, science and nature – are subsequently redefined following Latour’s philosophical perspective, in an attempt to define a different theoretical basis for a sustainable AI urbanism in the Anthropocene. Finally, the principles of a design philosophy shaped by Latour are used to change the design culture that informs AI urbanism towards a more sustainable practice. This paper constructs and promotes a dialogue between the disciplines of philosophy and urban theory with urban design in the conviction that the principles produced by the former and the practices carried out by the latter must start a biunivocal relationship. The paper reveals that in order to change design culture in the field of AI urbanism, it is necessary to rethink some of the key ideas that inform the Western and modern worldview through novel philosophical reflections.
