This work concentrates on the recent phenomenon of the self-representing photographic productions in Rio de Janeiro's “favelas” (slums). We focus on the experience of the photographic agency “Imagens do Povo”. Besides being a photographic agency, “Imagens do Povo” is also a popular photographic school and a place to archive images, being linked with the “Observatório de Favelas” (Slum's Observatory). The main objectives of the research are: verify if the image production of “Agência do Povo” can be perceived as a social-cultural critic against the traditional forms of presentation and representation of the “favelas”; and if, through its pedagogic use, these images can promote new practices of citizenship. The materials and methods of research were: participant observation, interviews, and collecting data through many different media. As a conclusion, this research showed that the dual logic through which the “favela” is understood can be overcame with the inclusion of the images in a bigger sphere of circulation, as a form of visual inclusion; and, finally, the emphasis on the notion of self representation turned to be an efficient way to an inter cultural dialog and for the consolidation of an opened epistemics.

Quo Vadis SDGs: Transforming the Pledge of Sustainable Development into an African Public Policy CommitmentThe world unanimously espoused the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Develop-ment in 2015, determinedly aiming at global prosperity while protecting the envi-ronment. The SDGs, were designed under global unity, and shared aspirations. The unanimously agreed targets embodied that spirit of unity as the guiding light for all nations. Regrettably, having noted that we are not on track to meet the them, the UN convened a high-level political forum aiming to put them back on track. As most of the goals were missed (between near misses and a few very startling disappointments), what does this hold for Africa an what can be done? On the other hand, AI will usher in an era of infinite opportunities or herald a new realm to end humanity, but it will undeniably transmute the world. Will Africa use the power of AI to achieve the SDGs. This think-piece augurs on the need to focus on an African public policy and commitment for urgent actions within the SDG priorities: goals aligned with poverty alleviation and climate change adaptation within the remit of maximizing the value of resources and technological innovation to address stresses on global public goods. Some of the largest tropical rainforests in the world are in the Congo basin. Using nature-based sequestration alone, these forests can provide up to a third of the world’s sequestration needs. For Africa, the urgency is to focus on transforming political, economic and social governance milieu. By controlling grand corruption, illegal exploitation of mineral resources and a commitment to address poverty and diseases from the billions saved in illicit capital flows, Africans can fulfill the promise of a livable continent as heralded in the recent Nairobi Climate Summit Declaration. Keywords: Africa, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), CoPs, political governance, economic governance and social governance
