This research tried to look further at the data journalism practice among Indonesian journalists, to see how far they are practising data journalism in their daily work. The population of the survey is not only data journalists, but all journalists in Indonesia no matter which sector they are covering. This research has found that the lack of knowledge in data analysis and access to the data became two main barriers which were mentioned by the respondents. It is understandable since data analysis never been taught to journalism students at the universities in the country.

The government built Satu Data Indonesia (SDI) as part of implementing the principle of open government. Through SDI, all data from the government from in Indonesia including data from government agencies can be easily accessed by visiting the data.go.id website. This situation should be a good ecosystem to develop data journalism in Indonesia, because the government provides abundant data. This study aims to see the implementation of SDI from the perspective of data journalists. Data journalist is a profession that is directly related to SDI, they are tasked with managing data to be presented to the public in a simple and easy-to-understand manner for the general public. By interviewing data journalists from Katadata and Lokadata (two online media who declare themselves as data journalism), this qualitative research is expected to provide constructive input on the implementation of One Data Indonesia. Despite the growing interest in data journalism in newsrooms and its more recent emergence as an academic discipline, there is a need for systematic research on the state-of-the-art and current data journalism-related practices in newsrooms. The Global Data Journalism survey was an attempt to address this gap by studying the data journalism practices in newsrooms across the world. This study provides a descriptive view of the results of this study and discusses the findings on several aspects of data journalism practice, characteristics of data journalists and data teams, and their skills and educational requirements. We further provide insight into the values associated with journalistic work and analyse the ways in which the community believes data journalism has improved or undermined these values.

Data journalism has recently emerged as an important method of news gathering and editing in journalism. For data journalism-which includes the process of producing news from data-journalists need to have various skills and competencies. As a result of the literature review, it is observed that the required skills and competencies for data journalism have not been determined precisely, and in this regard, there is a lack of quantitative studies to measure these skills and competencies of data journalism. This study aims to develop a unique scale that will reveal the data journalism skills of news producers. For this purpose, a data journalism scale has been developed through an online survey applied to news producers registered with the Turkish Press Agency (BIK). As a result of the item pool, expert views, and the scale application stages, it is understood that data journalism skills can be measured with a 2-factor structure: "data skills and tools" and "journalism skills." The Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient for the overall 21-item data journalism scale was calculated as 0.856, the data skills and tools factor as 0.883, and the journalism skill factor as 0.821. As a result of the research, it has been determined that while the journalism skills of the news producers are at a high level, their competence in data processing is low. In this sense-as a result of the study-a revision is recommended in both academic and professional training curriculum to include data collection, analysis and visualization skills that will improve data skills of news producers.

The Internet and technological developments have brought profound changes in social, cultural, and political structures worldwide. These changes have influenced not only the formal background, but also contextual frame of those structures. Perhaps no field has been more affected than media. The Internet and Web 2.0 technologies have led to the formation of new media platforms-digital media tools. Massive collections of data, search engines, and complex data services have emerged. Thus, the term "Big Data" has become widespread worldwide. Much research has been conducted to understand how various disciplines make use of and benefit from big data. In this context, media and communication scholars have focused on this newest concept in terms of effective data use and interpretation of complex information in practice. Big Data has become a keyword in contemporary journalism studies. The use of various data sets, graphics, complex charts, figures, and advanced techniques in news making and presentation has been discussed within the framework of data journalism since the late 2000s worldwide. The current study aims to find out how data journalism has been conceptualized in Turkey, and what are the inadequacies that need to be developed. To this end, data journalism-related studies were subjected to content analysis. The findings showed that there is still lack of conceptualization of data journalism and comprehensive research in Turkey.

Digital and computational technology is steadily developing and continually bringing changes in the field of journalism, which faces a major crisis, as people's trust in the media continues to decrease. This paper studies the subject of data journalism which is increasing in popularity and is considered to be at the forefront of these changes. This kind of journalism may be a way to re-establish and strengthen journalism's value, as well as to reassure its sustainability. Datasets, tools, policies on Freedom of Information and transparency and professionals become constantly available for data journalism to flourish. However, there are still many challenges along with skepticism and confusion around its role and value in the field. In the near future, data journalism seems to gain more trust by the news organization and the public, as both start to comprehend its potentials.
DATA AND TECHNOLOGY: ONE OF THE CHALLENGES FOR JOURNALISM (Atena Editora), 2022
In the constantly changing society we live in, the way journalism is done has undergone major changes. However, it must be noted that the pillars of journalism continue to be based on ethical values, the search for truth and objectivity. One of the factors contributing to change in this profession is the widespread use of new technologies. In this work, in order to adjust teaching to the new emerging needs of future professionals, we will focus on the information contained in the data and how to analyze it, since the data have been increasingly used as a source of news. The proposed challenge was to analyze how three leading Portuguese newspapers covered the news of the pandemic caused by COVID-19. In this sense, it was necessary to prepare the database for analysis and plan what information to extract from the data. In addition to Excel, used to organize the database, we used the Python programming language, which allowed for a more detailed analysis of the news coverage of the pandemic.

Data journalism is emerging as a new subspecialty in Indian journalism. Indian data journalism practice is in nascent stage and newsrooms have lately started recognizing it as a new practice. There were specific issues and challenges faced by journalists in western news rooms as they adopted the practice. To generate a comparative perspective, the study carried out semi-structured interviews with Indian data journalists about their perceptions on the challenges of practicing data journalism. The results show that there are external and internal bottlenecks in practicing data journalism in India. While irregular data releases, use of unfriendly formats by governmental authorities is a major concern; reluctance of media organizations to invest in data teams is identified as an internal challenge. Indian data journalists are skeptical about the audience's participatory potential, which has restricted them from relying on practices like crowd-sourcing.
