Prayers for Blessing Food on Pascha: The Witness of Byzantine Greek Euchologia (8 th –14 th cent.)2023 •
Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection are celebrated and remembered in liturgical rites that came to form the highpoint of the Christian liturgical year — Holy Week and Pascha. By the eighth century, prayers and rites for processions with palm branches on Palm Sunday, for preparing chrism and washing feet on Holy Thursday, and exorcisms on Holy Friday for those preparing for baptism on Holy Saturday, are known in the earliest Euchologion manuscript, Vatican Barberini Gr. 336 (8th cent.). Most of these prayers and rites for Holy Week are connected with the Baptism of new members of the Church — a sign of new life through participation in Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection. Within the following centuries, however, additional rites are also known in later Euchologia, specifically for the blessing of various foods on Pascha. This poster presents prayers for blessing foods on Pascha from Byzantine Greek Euchologia dating from the 8th to 14th centuries. The poster is divided into two sections: the upper part presents a timeline tracing aspects of the development of Pascha and Holy Week, as well as the practice of blessing food on Pascha, while the lower part contains the known corpus of prayers in Greek for blessing food on Pascha in Byzantine Euchologia manuscripts. These include prayers for animal sacrifice, prayers for blessing meat, and prayers for blessing eggs and cheese, some of which have been taken from other contexts (such as kampanismos) and reused here for the purpose of blessing food. In fact, few of them have any direct textual connection to the celebration of Pascha — the resurrection of Christ. The content of the poster is based on the research conducted as part of the Vienna Euchologia Project, who preliminary results have been published in Daniel Galadza, “Prayers and Blessings for Holy Week in the ‘Occasional Prayers’ of the Byzantine Euchologion,” in Studia Patristica CVIII, vol. 5: Euchologia, eds. Markus Vinzent and Claudia Rapp (Leuven: Peeters, 2021), 33–54.

Judicial Prayers and Biblical Models in the Story of Apollonius 322023 •
The layering of classical and biblical language in the Story of Apollonius has fueled debate about the readership and religious contexts of the late Latin romance. This article analyzes the mixture of pagan and biblical elements in the central murder plot of Tarsia, for which two characters plead their innocence to an unnamed god. A reinterpretation of the intertexts in their parallel prayers reveals how the romance combines the formulae of judicial prayers and the Latin Vulgate to shape reader response to the episode. Apollonius 32 thereby accommodates readers from diverse religious traditions and foreshadows the story's final administration of justice.

POTS, PANS, AND PEOPLE. Chapter III-C: Early Postclassic Period2023 •
After the downfall of Teotihuacan and other states of the Classic period, the political map of the Mesoamerican ecumene changed drastically, and the ‘climax area’ of Mesoamerican civilization moved to a different part of the ecumene. The city of Tula, in the present state of Hidalgo, saw an epoch of florescence during the Early Postclassic period (ca. AD 900-1200). The Toltec state became one of the dominant polities in the Mesoamerican scene; its influence was felt throughout the ecumene, from northwest Mexico to the Yucatán Peninsula.

Archaeological evidence suggests that North Amerindians were brewing maize beer in the Southwest (Arizona, Colorado, California, New Mexico) around the 10th century, probably earlier. The presence of an Amerindian brewing tradition in North America is therefore clear cut. One question remains: this brewing tradition does not seem to have moved north or east beyond a boundary drawn by the Colorado or Rio Grande rivers. So why is this? Another hotbed of brewing tradition could revolve around Cahokia, a central cultural and commercial site of the Mississippian culture that died out around the 16th century, a century or more before the advent of the French in the region. Another major cultural centre, the Appalachian region, bears witness to an indigenous brewing tradition from the time of the first contacts with European settlers in the 18th century. Is this tradition older? Finally, fragmentary accounts from missionaries describe a type of beer made from maize, wild rice or starchy roots in the Great Lakes region, particularly among the Hurons. Returning to the western regions, two ancient brewing traditions preceded the arrival of the settlers. One belonged to the Apache-Comanche peoples, and before that to the Zuňi people. The other belonged to the indigenous peoples of the Pacific coast, who brewed carob beers. Taken together, these data justify reopening the issue of traditional North Amerindian beers. North America is presented as a subcontinent devoid of brewing traditions before the arrival of European settlers. This is clearly untrue. We conclude by questioning the survival of this myth and the almost complete lack of archaeological research on the subject on American soil.
